Publisher's Summary

Reviver is an action-packed supernatural thriller from debut author Seth Patrick that is perfect for all fans of Justin Cronin, Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Death won't silence them. Revivers. Able to wake the recently dead, and let them bear witness to their own demise. Twelve years after the first reviver came to light, they have become accepted by an uneasy public. The testimony of the dead is permitted in courtrooms across the world. Forensic revival is a routine part of police investigation. In the United States, that responsibility falls to the Forensic Revival Service. Despite his troubled past, Jonah Miller is one of their best. But while reviving the victim of a brutal murder, he encounters a terrifying presence. Something is watching. Waiting.

His superiors tell him it was only in his mind, a product of stress. Jonah is not so certain. Then Daniel Harker, the first journalist to bring revival to public attention, is murdered, and Jonah finds himself getting dragged into the hunt for answers. Working with Harker's daughter Annabel, he's determined to find those responsible and bring them to justice. Soon they uncover long-hidden truths that call into doubt everything Jonah stands for, and reveal a threat that if not stopped in time, will put all of humanity in danger...

What the Critics Say

"A debut supernatural thriller from a startling new talent. A brilliantly original concept" (Peter James, Shortlist)

"From its arresting first sentence through an opening chapter that is so irresistibly and hair-raisingly seductive and into a story bristling with originality and descriptive excellence, this is truly a book to savour . . . An impressive, intelligent and exciting debut." (Lancashire Evening Post)

"A skilfully plotted and compulsively readable supernatural thriller." (Guardian)

"Good book shame about the narrator"

There are lots of things to like about this book, the premise of bringing people back so they can tell you who murdered them or just so you can say goodbye to the love ones you lose is maybe not a new idea, as anyone who has ever seen the first episode of torchwood will tell you. That said I have read that Seth has stated he came up with the idea first, I say, I really don't care who thought of it first I'm just glad he wrote this take on the idea.
There are a few holes in the plot but its rare nowadays to find a plot without any.
So all in all I'd defanatly say give it a try.
Seth has taken me back to when I loved watching the twilight zone, and made me hungry for some more strange tales.
    Now for the bad bit
If you have never heard a Irishman before then you may be able to forgive.
But ari fliakos does to the Irish what dick van dyke did to the cockney accent.
For the most part I thought he was doing a Scottish person pretending to be Irish ( just picture Sean Connery in untouchables)
I was hoping he would be a minor character, but no such luck.
For those of you that read as much you listen to audio books, then maybe this is one to read.
I did get past it by just pretending he lied about where he was from, ( unlike Roy detrice doing daenerys in the a dance with dragons.... Don't get me started on that)
    Sorry I digress,
If your looking for something a bit different and are fine with Americans who can't do accents well then download it now
    You won't be disappointed.

    "sort it out"

This is a good story although it does rather gloss over the God question but I am fuming over the narration. Who picks the narrators? I really want to know. This story requires a narrator who can do an Irish and British accent so who do they pick? Someone who can not do an accent for toffee! This would not be so bad if the story was a comedy but it is actually a sci fi/horror. Come on audible sort it out. A good narrator is as important as the story in an audible book.

    Story
    "A gripping chiller"

This story is difficult to categorise: horror, thriller, supernatural chiller, it is any and all of these and I don't think tthis is a bad thing as, though writing for a specific genre makes marketing and shelving easier, it can make for a straitjacket for authors.

The initial premise is that "revivers" can contact and talk to the recently dead and have become so accepted that they work for insurance companies and the police. One of these forensic revivers experiences a deeply upsetting revival and his life begins to unravel as he comes to question his sanity and the nature of reality, life, death and everything he thought he believed.

Jonah Miller, the central character is well realised and although some characters are not as well developed, he and his key companions are fleshed out and believable. Perhaps Never (the name is explained in the story) could have been more fully formed but as I gather this is the first in a series I hope to find out more about him in the future. We do have some gruff but loveable stereotyped cops and a powerful, ambivalent, incredibly handsome multimillionaire businessman but I think this can be forgiven.

One of the things I like about this novel is that the climax to the story is not rushed off like an afterthought as happens much too often nowadays, instead Seth takes the time to enjoy bringing together all the strands and further ratcheting up the tension and excitement with lots of surprises, suspense and twists and turns.

Ok, I am afraid there has to be a criticism and it is not the book but the narration. Overall the narration is fantastic. Ari Fliakos has a voice which is enjoyable and easy to listen to, for which I would happily give him 5 stars, however there is a slight problem with accents, they all could have been better but they would not have spoiled my experience. Never's accent, though, is Irish and what Ari produced had me gritting my teeth each time the character appeared. It is not so poor that I would want to give 3 stars, I just can't allow myself to give 5 and ironically I would still very happily listen to any narration from Ari, but in this particular case please don't say you weren't warned.

    "Interesting concept, average story"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I struggled to get through it, I listened to half, went away and finished another book and felt guilty, so i finished this one.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Meh..

What didn’t you like about Ari Fliakos’s performance?

My god, his accents are just awful. I live in the UK and hear the various accents he butchered fairly often and this guys murdered the lot. I have no idea why he didn't play it all as American and forget the irish guy..

Could you see Reviver being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

yes it is TV show material, no idea who would be in it..

    Any additional comments?

I liked the initial concept of the book, revivers, crime fighters, I thought this could be interesting! I found it fizzled out a bit easily.

Would you consider the audio edition of Reviver to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version, so I can't compare.

What did you like best about this story?

I think that the story is very original, and was a mix between crime and horror. I loved the characters and I thought that although Jonah doesn't have a huge personality, you really bond with him.

Have you listened to any of Ari Fliakos’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No I haven't but I was not impressed with his portrayal of a Northern Irish accent. I thought that the English sounding female didn't have a great voice either.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes this book made me laugh and cry. It definitely stirred my emotions and I really felt for the characters especially Jonah, and Never made new chuckle a lot.

    "Original and entertaining"
Where does Reviver rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This has been one of my favourite audiobooks so far: a good story that's not too hard to follow and has some interesting twists and turns.

What did you like best about this story?

Good escapist stuff that asks 'What if?' without getting too heavy.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrator was good in the main BUT: Never's accent hovered somewhere between Ireland, Scotland and Pakistan. The leading female character was meant to be Anglicised American but ended up sounding a bit vapid (contrary to who she was in the book!).

To be honest it detracted from the performance and was a bit irritating at times.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but I wanted to pick it up a lot.

    Any additional comments?

I'd definitely recommend this. Try out the audiobook. If Never's accent is too much, get a refund and buy the Kindle or paper version instead! It's worth it.

What did you like most about Reviver?

The story and the Narrator worked brilliant together and the twists and turns continued to the end.

What did you like best about this story?

It really did keep me gipped and I didn't want to stop listening.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Every scene with a revival was spooky and if I could hide behind my hands I would!

"Brilliant chiller - more please Seth!"

I really enjoyed this book, an unusual story, if you have read Stephen Woodworths 'Violet' series then this is likely to appeal.
It has an interesting slant on the usual crime thriller with an element of fantasy which works well.
The narrator has the right type of deep and gravely voice for this book.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I'm just starting this book and so far so good but.... the narrater should avoid undertaking accents in the future. Quite simply, no! it is really very distracting.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The narrater was fine until he attempts THE ACCENT. A horror show in itself. Really, someone should have staged an intervention or something.

Interesting story with great tension throughout. Goes from actionpacked to bonechilling and handles both parts flawlessly. The narrator is quickly becoming a personal favorite, he delivers every line perfectly and gives real personality to the characters.
