Earth’s future is bleak in the gripping sci-fi fantasy audiobook Ready Player One, written by the brilliant Ernest Cline and narrated by American actor Wil Wheaton. Set in the near future, most of the human race have locked themselves into a virtual reality to escape the planet that the past generations had destroyed. Within this virtual existence lies the answer to infinite riches and Wade Watts spends every second on the treasure hunt. It is a frenzied race with countless players, all infected with desperation. The danger is intense and will affect them all.

Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The book behind the major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

Now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

It's the year 2044 and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty and disease are widespread.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late 20th century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.

Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

Geeky Goodness

A great vehicle for a trip down memory lane, passed each of the old school games machine you've ever played, the ones you argued over in the school playground, and a few way before your time. Add some North American rock, and mix with a good dose of 80's movies, 70&80s TV (without Dallas) and serve with the over attention of detail obsessed pop culture geek. A free side of light romance is included for your aural pleasure.

Enjoyable. If you enjoy games and references to 80s pop culture it's worth a read / listen and you'll enjoy it. If you don't have that interest, then I don't think the story is going to hold the listener. The performance is good 4/5

Story wise it's part Matrix, part Enders Game, part Neuromancer. 3/5

Great story well read!

Long story short loved it! The story was enough to keep me hooked but throw in the 80s and 'nerd culture' references and it goes from good to great!

Awesome slice of nostalgia

If you were around in the late 1970s and 1980s and consider yourself a geek, then you will absolutely love this story. So many memories from my youth came flooding back to me.

Great performance by the narrator too. You could really feel his passion for the era and he probably had as much fun growing up then as I did.

A Marvellous Nostalgafest

Cline paint a rich and believable near future for a teen audience that any genXer can't help but love. Classic good guys vs some nasty pieces of work who just want to suck the fun out everything. A coming of age story taking the best of virtual worlds culture and 80's nostalgia to the limits read perfectly by the only person who possibly could. Grab this, it'll be the best credit you've ever spent ;)

brilliant story.

loved it. Will Wheaton just needs to learn some girl voices :-) the level of descriptive language Cline uses is phenomenal. But younger people and others that don't know the references to old video games etc might not get the full experience.

Almost faultless

A virtually flawless, spellbinding and engrossing book that is really brought to life by Wil Wheaton. Wonderfully nostalgic tribute to 80s, it will make anyone of a certain age think "I remember that!" many times as you follow along. This book is an absolute must for any self-respecting science fiction or video game fan. It is very nearly my #1 all time Audible book, after dozens of titles and 100s of hours of listening!
