Editor reviews

Earth’s future is bleak in the gripping sci-fi fantasy audiobook Ready Player One, written by the brilliant Ernest Cline and narrated by American actor Wil Wheaton. Set in the near future, most of the human race have locked themselves into a virtual reality to escape the planet that the past generations had destroyed. Within this virtual existence lies the answer to infinite riches and Wade Watts spends every second on the treasure hunt. It is a frenzied race with countless players, all infected with desperation. The danger is intense and will affect them all.

Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The book behind the major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

Now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.

A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?

It's the year 2044 and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty and disease are widespread.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late 20th century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.

Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

Fantastic book

If you could sum up Ready Player One in three words, what would they be?

Been a while since I enjoyed a novel this much. I could not stop listening. What a great story line. I know its probably a geek thing to like it, but the imagination is endless. Can't wait to see the movie, which seems to have Steven Spielberg as a director.

I loved this book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, definitely, in fact I instantly went out and bought the paperback for a friend!

What did you like best about this story?

The book is refreshingly modern, really interesting, has all the traditional ingredients of a great book - suspense, romance, good vs bad etc - provides an almost historical account of the development of video games, is very easy and addictive to read and thoroughly enjoyable. I hated putting it down to go to bed, I just wanted to keep going with it!

Which character – as performed by Wil Wheaton – was your favourite?

All characters were brilliantly performed. Wil Wheaton is one of the best audio book performers I have had the pleasure to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It keep me interested, excited, happy, built suspense, gave me hope, shocked occasionally, saddened occasionally, educated, and mostly delivered pleasure in spades.

Any additional comments?

Ernest Cline is awesome. Will Wheaton is fantastic. What a great combination.

Outstanding immersive storytelling

This was one of the best books I've ever read (listened to). The story is engrossing, the culture references make you smile every time and the characters are based on honest real experiences.

Wil Wheaton's delivery is measured and absorbing. I listened to this in massive chunks at a time not wanting to turn it off.

If you are a geek, child of the 80's and 90's, movie, video game fan or simply want to listen to an outstanding story I heartily recommend this.

Now I'm going straight back to the start and listening again!

Virtual Reality in audio form.

Would you consider the audio edition of Ready Player One to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but Will Wheaton's performance of the book makes me expect so.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ready Player One?

Vivid descriptions of the world inside and outside of the Oaisis.

Have you listened to any of Wil Wheaton’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No, but after this, I want to.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Virtual Reality just got Real.

Any additional comments?

Every time I had to stop the audio I couldn't wait to switch it back on.
