Earth’s future is bleak in the gripping sci-fi fantasy audiobook Ready Player One, written by the brilliant Ernest Cline and narrated by American actor Wil Wheaton. Set in the near future, most of the human race have locked themselves into a virtual reality to escape the planet that the past generations had destroyed. Within this virtual existence lies the answer to infinite riches and Wade Watts spends every second on the treasure hunt. It is a frenzied race with countless players, all infected with desperation. The danger is intense and will affect them all.

The book behind the major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.
Now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg.
A world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?
It's the year 2044 and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty and disease are widespread.
Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late 20th century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.
Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed.

I couldn't put this down!
Wow brilliant story and great reading. I've listened too a lot of audio books and this one is the fist that had me completely hooked from start to finish. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it had to come to an end.

Fiction thriller for the 21st century.
I didn't expect to really understand this, let alone enjoy it. But I did. I'm a fifty something and not that "savvy" when it comes to console games. I've watched my kids grow up on this stuff and thought I ought to "dip my foot in the pool" via an audio book.
Well, what a great listen. The story was good, as was the narration. However, the best and most accessible part for me was the beautifully interwoven reference to 80's pop culture, which transported me back to some really happy, memorable times.
I could go on but won't. Just listen. It's a super novel.

wow what a great story.
So I just finished this book and I literally got upset when I had to stop reading it for sleep etc.
Its so nostalgic and as a child of the 80's, a lot of the content really reminds me of being a kid playing in arcades.
The narration also has to be mentioned. It is engaging, funny and really sets a bar for audio book narrators, a lot of them are boring as hell!
If you buy and listen to a book anytime soon. make it this one

I can't wait for this game to become a reality!
Would you consider the audio edition of Ready Player One to be better than the print version?
I loved the world that this book created, and knowing that it will probably be ten years or so and this massive open world environment will be a fully realised reality, what with games such as No Mans Sky coming out next year which offers users an endless universe filled with planets and spaceships to explore.
I thought the characters and story were very good, I would say the only minor annoyances was the often repeated, "I did this, I did that, I went here, etc" Just jarred me a little I guess.
But don't have that put you off in anyway - this was a great listen and a fun world to loose yourself in!
