WARNING: May Contain Werewolves.
A pyramid predating all known cultures appears without warning. Its discovery throws into question everything we know about the origins of mankind. Inside lies incredible technology, proof of a culture far more advanced than our own. Something dark lurks within, eager to resume a war as old as mankind. When it is unleashed it heralds the end of our species’ reign.
A plague of werewolves spreads across the world. A sunspot larger than anything in recorded history begins to grow. Yet both pale in comparison to the true threat, the evil the werewolves were created to fight.

I totally love the irony of a book about werewolves, with featured parts for wolves, dogs, and coyotes written by a guy named Fox - canines rule! That was enough to pique my interest in this book, but I got much more fun than I bargained for. No Such Thing as Werewolves is properly designated Paranormal Fantasy (not only werewolves, but also hints of Zombies to come), but you could almost slot this in sci-fi since all the paranormal phenomenon is given scientific explanation drawing from various sciences - helio astronomy, archaeology, zoology, genetics, virology, and geology. Take that spicy mix and blend in a bit of ancient history, mythology, some great characters, a coming disaster, a little humor and a lot of suspense and you get a really entertaining and unique werewolf adventure.
The book takes a little time to set up the scenario and introduce characters, but once a major crisis occurs (about 2 and 1/2 hours in) it becomes really hard to stop listening as the tension continues to build and the explanations trickle in. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I'd bet virtually anyone who listens to book 1 is going to buy book 2.
Ryan Kennard Burke sounds a bit like Luke Daniels, but he's not as deft at letting the narrative dictate the tone. Burke uses that "high suspense" voice for every sentence even when the book is in a more relaxed section. However, his character voices were good and this is an enjoyable performance.
I also really loved that Chris Fox worked in some subtle "banner waiving" for wolves since most wolf species are endangered and this apex predator could use a bit more love and respect from all of us. Can't wait for the sequel!
"Gripping story, great performance"
The print version of the book is quite exciting, but the audio book takes it to another level!
The story has many facets. Yes it is a story about werewolves, but it is so much more. It has many elements of sci-fi and a tinge of Indiana Jones (humor and all). The characters are compelling, the action is dramatic, and the story deep and engaging.
I loved Sheila!
Yes, but I can't say without spoilers.
I enjoyed the print version of the book, but the audio book truly does this book justice.
Definitely because I loved both the story and the narrator.
Everything but especially the lore.
No but I will check out more from him.
When a pyramid suddenly appears a team of scientists thinks that it is the discovery of their life. This pyramid predates any other things every unearthed on earth and they have no idea where it came from. What they don't know is that with the pyramid comes something that they think is legend. But it also heralds the end of the world. They need to figure things out before things are too late.
While looking through Audible, I came across this book and had to add it to my list. I love werewolves and this sounded awesome. I'm so glad I got a chance to listen to this because it was so so good.
Character wise, there are many but all of them have a central role to play. They are well written and developed but I think my favourite was Blair. He is only a teacher but is drawn into the action because he is the best at his job. He is the one that can translate the hieroglyphics but his life is changed because of it!
Plot wise, I loved everything about it. I loved the lore and history behind the pyramid. It was fascinating! I loved finding out about the werewolves and why they were created. I loved the scientific and military aspect of the story. The werewolves are spreading like a plague but there is a reason why and the twist the author put on it was amazing!!
What else can I say without spoiling something other than this book was amazing. Its a complex and gripping read and one I know I'll listen to again! It's well written and hard to believe that it's the authors first book! He put so much into the story and it shows. It's action packed and with plenty of twists to keep every one reading. This is quite a long book but I flew through it! I loved everything about it and highly recommend.
There is quite a cliffhanger ending and I normally hate cliffhangers, but the authors note at the end was a good addition and took the edge off. I had to laugh a little at the ending though because the characters quip was so funny!!
Anyway, I loved No Such Things as Werewolves and would highly recommend the audio. The narrator did a great job of voicing the characters and the wolves. His voice was easy to listen to and follow. I'm so glad I listened to it because while reading it I could imagine it as a movie playing out. It was so good and I can not wait for book 2 to see what happens!!!
"Engaging story, brilliantly narrated"
This author is smart: gave me the kindle book free and this audiobook cheap via WhisperSync, trusting that it would be good enough to hook me on the series. It absolutely is! No regrets.
This story creatively weaves fantastic creatures and mythological systems into everyday life, the best kind of urban fantasy. Well-paced, and a nice mix of action, mystery, and character development. And, while this is clearly a tightly connected series, each book does have a real ending, which is important to me.
And the narration! Just phenomenal. The narration is 99% of why I'm here reviewing this, rather than leaving my reviews on Goodreads alone, as per usual. His voices for the characters were just perfect, adding that little extra to these great characters (I've missed his voices for the characters, having cheaped out and switched to kindle for the rest of the series).
Basically, I'm not sure what I could do to make this book better. Not only will I read more by this author, I think I may have to seek out more by this narrator, which is highly unusual for me!
"Werewolves, Zombies and Vampires Galore"
I am writing this review after finishing the third book, Vampires Don't Sparkle. My first and most enthusiastic proclamation of this series is that I have burned through these three books in less than a month. I could not get enough of the new take on these age old mythological beings. All of my spare time came to a grinding halt and pushed to the side.
The series starts with the werewolves and gives you the hint of all the great things to come. A slow burn involving alien intervention, with each book establishing a deep and rich story of each of the mythological beings and their god-like place in the narrative and their impact on human history. Enough said before giving away too much.
Archaeology, fantasy, mythology and sci-fi blend into an exceptional story and you wonder how it all works....but it does. The characters are richly created and you feel the controversies they feel as what was once considered myth comes to life.
The narration by Mr. Burke is exceptional giving the voices of humans and monsters great life.
If like me you like to research your new favorite author feel free to look up Chris Fox. He is an indie writer who values his fans and reviews with great enthusiasm. Sign up for his newsletter and get a free prequel book and a personal thank you from the author.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I can't wait until book 4. Let's get cracking Mr. Fox.
"Different and a real story line keeps moving"
Well laid plot with a great host of characters to like or dislike, The unlikely hero who has alittle trouble figuring out the real truth
I haven't had too many to compare this story line too. It is unique that it plays with the past just enough to ring true
Again all I have to say is Mr Burke is a true professional who has a wide range of talents that make for a great read
Yes. but time doesn't allow that to happen. It keeps you interested enough to want to get to the next chapter
Look forward to reading the rest of the series
"A fun adventure with great narration!"
The engaging and fast moving plot. Each chapter keeps you wanting to read more! I also really loved the humor. I laughed many times while reading/listening to the book. There are a lot of geeky and pop cultural jokes woven in.
I especially liked Liz. She kicks ass!
So many good ones to choose from, it's hard to pick. The last scene is a great lead in to the next upcoming book!
Chris Fox has written a wonderfully engaging thriller that mixes together fantasy, sci-fi, technology, and mythology all into one. The narration by Ryan Burke really brings the characters to life!
Yes it's unique and fun
The goddess she is so badass
Yes it is funny at times( I LOL many times )
if you like Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Series give this a try.
"Amazingly original and entertaining"
Yes definitely . This is one of the best audio books I have listened to in a long while . The writing is excellent and humorous and the characters are engaging. It is not just some ordinary werewolf story it is much more than that. The vast array of mythical and modern plus original and varied characters are awesomely done.
It is too original for comparison. I think I'd you Luke's the Iron Druid series you will love this series.
Without spoilers I will just say California and the brother's house
YES, and I did
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the genre and a truly original spin on the old legends of pyramids and gods
"awesome mix of adventure, Sci-Fi, Fantasy"
This was an awesome mix of adventure (think Indiana Jones), Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Mythology all in one action packed story. While this one did start out a bit slow for me , it did really start to pick up once Blair is in Peru at the site with the rest of the scientific team. From here I found the story very engaging and the story pulls you along on the wild ride that is “There are no Such Things as Werewolves”. There is so much I want to say about this story but so far everything I start out typing is just full of spoilers…..I will say that in the beginning I was very happy with myself to have figured out what the ancient enemy was….only to have that turned upside down and realized about 60-70% in that I was very wrong (which is a good thing, I like a book that surprises me). And the cliffhanger this ends on…..I mean really….how could you do that to us the listener/reader……that was just kinda mean. I will now have to satisfy myself with the prequel “The First Ark” and bide my time for the audio of the next book to be released.
~Narration~ Ryan Kennard Burke is a new to me narrator (although his voice is so familiar I’m wondering if he has narrated other books under another name……) and he did an amazing job telling this story. A narrator can really make or break a book and in this case the narration just brings the characters to life. I will definitely be looking at other books by RKB, and cannot wait to listen to the next book in this series. My one complaint is the production quality (not sure if my review copy was a clean “edited” copy or not), at first it seemed like there was some static or echoing and this continued on throughout the story. I don’t know anything about sound recording or production other then knowing something does not sound right, so I had my husband listen and he said what I was hearing sounded like sibilance overloading the recording or maxing out the compressor.
Other than that small issue I enjoyed the story and the narration and am looking forward to more.
