Publisher's Summary

Something happened that night in the woods at Camp Red Hawk. But all Joel and Leah can recall is sneaking out for a late hike with five camp friends - and that only the two of them and their friend Mike returned. They have no memory of what happened to the others. No memory of anything after leaving the camp.

In the years that follow, they realize something has changed inside of them. They are different from others in ways they never should be. In ways that send their lives down disturbing and terrifying paths. As they grapple with adulthood, their only hope for understanding why they've been altered lies with them finding each other again. But how is that possible when their memories of one another have been erased?

    "A thrilling sci-fi adventure"
Have you listened to any of Kirby Heyborne’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I loved this one and will try out more

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes, and I almost did

    Any additional comments?

Hello, dear Audiobooks Fans! As you may well know, Brett Battles is one of my favorites authors and when I ”heard”, earlier this year, that he is working on a new book set apart from his regular series, I was very excited! I waited almost two additional months after the Kindle release in order to get my hands on the audiobook and I’m glad that I did!

I will try to be very careful with what I tell you about the story, because I want to make you want to read it and, at the same time I must avoid spoilers at all costs… Ok, let’s try this!

Mine opens with a scene reminescent of all those scary movies that were airing on US Cable in the late 80s. A few teenagers are in Summer vacation at Camp Red Hawk, deep in the woods and some of them want to do something brave and totally stupid after their minders fall asleep. As you may imagine, everything goes terribly wrong and they all end up missing… After a few days, just three teens are found, and they are changed forever…

The story spans over 20 years and follows the three of them, a girl and two boys, as they try to understand what happened that dreadful night in the woods. Maybe, if they all three put together what they remember, they will find an answer, but how? Their memories of each other have been erased!

Mine is something new, something different from what Mr. Battles usually writes, but it is as good or even better, in some aspects, than some of his previous works. I think that Mine is targeted at a younger audience, somewhere between the ages of 16 to 24, not at fully grown male adults of 33, but, even so I listened to it almost continuously from start to finish and I can say that I loved it!

When I said that Mine is even better than some of Brett‘s previous works, I was thinking about the deep character development we can find in this book. Brett Battles is a Thriller writer at heart, with Quinn, Project Eden an Poe he delivers non-stop action, but with Mine and with the Rewinder series he takes his time to tell the story differently, and I like that very much! As I was listening, I discovered that I was deeply caring for Joel, Leah and even for Mike, cheering them on, wanting to unravel the mystery…

If you like Paranormal and Sci-Fi thrillers, you can give Mine a try and you’ll discover why I love Brett‘s work so much!

Another nice surprise, for me at least, was the selection of Kirby Heyborne as the narrator for Mine. All other series by Brett Battles are performed by some great and award winning actors that include names like Scott Brick, Abby Craden, Vikas Adam and MacLeod Andrews.

I have to admit that I didn’t listen to any audiobooks narrated by Kirby Heyborne before Mine and that I was a little anxious. I’m very picky when it comes to narrators, but I shouldn’t have worried at all! Kirby does a fantastic job with the narration, he reads, he acts, he can switch between voices easily and by doing so he keeps all the characters well differentiated for the listener… Near the end of the book there are some very tensed moments and I think that he overacted, just a little, by shouting too loud in some scenes… but, I won’t keep that against him as he delivered a great overall performance.

As a side note, I want to add that both me and my girlfriend, Alina, are listening to audiobooks everyday and as we are usually talking about what we read, I discovered that she enjoys Kirby Heyborne’s performance of the two of the three audiobooks in the Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trilogy… She is at the 3rd right now and maybe she’ll start writing a few reviews soon…

I hope to see Brett Battles as he announces the next book in this series very soon and I can’t wait to listen to more audiobooks performed by Kirby Heyborne, as I enjoyed his narration very much…

    "Very entertaining contemporary sci-fi!"

Mine is not at all like Brett Battles traditional novels such as his espionage novels of his Jonathan Quinn series, or his post apocalypse novels of his Project Eden series, or his modern detective novels of the Logan Harper series, or even the suspense thrillers he co-wrote in the Alexandra Poe series. On the other hand Mine is contemporary sci-fi sort of similar to Battles' recent Rewinder series. Few modern authors cross so many genre lines. I am very interested to see what the soon to be released The Excoms by Brett Battles will be like. But, Mr. Battles, please keep on releasing a new Jonathan Quinn novel every year.

I found Mine fascinating and entertaining. Narrator Kirby Heyborne is not totally new to me. He narrated Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, The Neighbor in Lisa Gardner D.D Warren series, and The Good Father by Diane Chamberlain each of which is in my Audible library. Heyborne is a very accomplished and competent narrator with a superbly clear voice. He is also and actor, singer, and song writer.

    "Mine? You Keep It."

Brett Battles is one of my favorite authors.
This book did not appeal to me.
It has the feel of a scary story being told by the light of a campfire. The audience would be a group of young teens.
    Oh well.

    "An unexpected surprise!"

I only purchased this book because it was on sale and I had a few dollars left on a credit. I very soon decided I had made a big mistake. The nature of the story did not draw me In at all, but I figured I'd hang in there and I'm so glad I did! As the characters developed I became more and more interested in the story and was soon hooked and could hardly stop listening. I grew to really like these characters. Syfy is certainly not something I would ever intentionally select but this book had enough of an interesting story to make it worthy of a good listen. The narrator also grew on me and by the end of the story I think I could become a fan of his.

    "Weird!"

This story leaves many questions unanswered, thus hinting at it being a series opener. However, the story itself can stand alone if you can ignore those open questions.

I read the story thinking the title referred to a location, and was surprised to discover it was actually more of a possessive term. Underground. I did say it was weird!

"teen-scifi, was lacking, didn't quite get there"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

nup, i'm sure it struck a chord with a bunch of teenagers

What didn’t you like about Kirby Heyborne’s performance?

performance wasn't terrible, it did get annoying with the depiction of yelling... over, and over and over again.

Could you see Mine being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

sure, it'd make for a good tv series, still be lacking though

    Any additional comments?

didn't follow through with the concept.

    "simply terrible"

I probably spent 40 hours listening to a nine and a half hour book just trying to make sense of it. This book is by far the worst one that Brett Battles has ever written. I really enjoyed his Eden series and thought erroneously that this might be comprable.

    "Delightfully Different"
What made the experience of listening to Mine the most enjoyable?

This was my first Brett Battles book and this one rocked!! Without spoilers, its a story that follows the lives of some kids that experience something together at a summer camp. If you like alien/mystery/sci-fi/paranormal thrillers, you will enjoy this story. I would say this is 60% mystery and 40% suspense.

I love the narrator Kirby Heyborne. To those who enjoyed his narration of Gone Girl, you will also love this one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Mike probably because I had the most empathy for him. The author created some great characters that you will want to route for!

Which character – as performed by Kirby Heyborne – was your favorite?

He does a great job with all voices but I especially enjoyed the reclaimers voice.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Reclaim This.

    Any additional comments?

I'm so excited about the possibiity of a sequel. More please!!

I was hooked almost immediately and loved the book until the very last part. Problem was for me that it leaves you with you having to assume rather then get full closer. A lot of people enjoy that, and if you like concluding some details at the end on your own, get this book.
