Publisher's Summary

Young Corban watches enviously as boys become warriors, learning the art of war. He yearns to wield his sword and spear to protect his king's realm. But that day will come all too soon. Only when he loses those he loves will he learn the true price of courage.

The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, the earth running dark with their heartsblood. Although the giant clans were broken in ages past, their ruined fortresses still scar the land. But now giants stir anew, the very stones weep blood, and there are sightings of giant wyrms. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. Sorrow will darken the world as angels and demons make it their battlefield. Then there will be a war to end all wars.

High King Aquilus summons his fellow kings to council, seeking an alliance in this time of need. Prophesy indicates darkness and light will demand two champions, the Black Sun and the Bright Star. They would be wise to seek out both, for if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust.

"A Surprising find, a decent book with a character"
Would you consider the audio edition of Malice to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the book so i cannot tell you.

What did you like best about this story?

To be honest the twisting route of light and truth into the darkness inch by inch and decision by decision. Its a great rendition of a similar and familiar story we all know and love.

What about Damian Lynch’s performance did you like?

He is a solid voice actor , was confused by the random accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

again I've heard this question its stupid.

    Any additional comments?

Dear avid listener, this book has 2 min characters and 4-6 sub characters, it follows mostly two main lads are coming of age, one is a prince the other a blacksmith son. you dont quite know who is the good guy and who is the bad. I would recommend this to most people.

"listen to ... the pause ... every 5 .... words."
What would have made Malice better?

    remove the narrators constant pausing.

Would you ever listen to anything by John Gwynne again?

    with a different narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Damian Lynch’s performances?

no no no ... and no

What character would you cut from Malice?

never made it past the first 30 mins

    Any additional comments?

i listen to 3 / 4 books a month while driving and this is the first one i have given up on completely.

    "Epic tale"

A great story with more than a little influence from Game of Thrones. The narration let it down a bit - seemed very rushed in places and lacking tension at exciting moments. I checked several times to see if I had it on fast speed but it wasn't. I know its a big book but there's no hurry!
One of those stories that deserves a second read or listen to get all the characters in the right place but well worth the time.

    "Boring reader"

I can't fully rate this audiobook because I didn't get very far. from what I did read, it had potential, but any potential was killed by the lackluster narration. With a better narrator that can bring different tones the book would be much better.

    "good time sink"

This is an audio book review.

It's not a good story. very predictable plot twists and its full of cliches, tropes.

The voice acting is good, though some characters and lines are jarring & just wrong. That is to be expected when the actor has to voice tens of characters.

I enjoyed the listen overall. recommended for a very long journey to fill time.

"Interesting story let down by an okay performance"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Changing character to character without slight descriptions each chapter is quite the mind juggler. I'll find myself towards the beginning of the book confused as the book skips character to character without having a small subtle description to help remind the reader who is who. It was often irritating when you left the book for more than 24 hours to come back and have no mental pick me ups.I also found a general lack of description in general, there were some bits that felt very uninspired and felt as if the author couldn't wait to get past it as such leaving a few chunks pretty bland.

What aspect of Damian Lynch’s performance might you have changed?

The shouting, there is one thing any audio technician or voice over artist will tell you. Don't whisper scream/shout. It sounds like he is at home and trying not to wake his wife or kids and it is extremely irritating and repulsive each time it happens.

    Any additional comments?

There was often times i felt the book luled and could of used some harsher editing, overall the story was interesting, especially the short stories and other lore in the book. I did find occasionally i had to put the book on hold because I had lost interest and didn't want to come back confused not remembering the last chapter. Perhaps this is my temporary lack of interest or my mood but I found it happened a occasionally in this book and hasn't happened to me before.

I guess this is where i write that I actually overall enjoyed the book more than I disliked it, the over arching story and progression where interest and kept me coming back for more each time and I finished the book in less than a week which I hope speaks for it in a positive light.

One place the author did very well was dialogue, it was very well splayed out and showed character development when it was implemented very well without it being abrasive.

Although I didn't like the whispering everything else that Damian Lynch did i highly approved. Each of the different accent and voices felt real and inspired despite the lack of the authors descriptions on them.

Overall it is a very interesting book that is weighed down by pockets of uninspired garble, or rushed scenes. The voicing was very well done except for the very poor shout-whispering.

    "Good start to a series"

I did enjoy this book it reminded me of another series with a youngster growing up with an expert woodsman who trains him.
I did lose track of some of the names some of which were similar, but I'm easily confused you probably won't be. I've downloaded the next in the series so take that as a recommendation.

Kind of like this book, only issue is with the narrator with to many pauses. Never know if he's narrating further or if something has happened to the app
