Summary

Great story
Took a bit to get going, but well worth waiting. A really good story and very well read - no problem identifying the characters!

Gets better later on
Just finished the trilogy and I must say it gets much better in the second and third volumes. I was skeptical at first, having prejudices about female fantasy writers, expecting heavy romance, endless gowns description, etc... None of that. Well, a bit of romance, but well weaved into the story. No mages and sorcery, either.
Political and religious games of power in an imaginary world with a wide range of interesting characters. Characters are developing nicely, twists and turns may be predictable, but not all the time. The narrator is fairly good. I am not a native English speaker, so accents didn't bother me. The only downside I got irritated with from time to time was dialogs and monologs, going on and on. Especially endless bickering between the two main characters. All in all - I would buy the sequel if there is going to be one.

Slowly, Slowly
The first few chapters of this book were painfully slow and hard going, but If you can bear wading through these, the book starts to pick up around chapter 16. That said, this book has corruption (of course), religion, politics (but no magic) all thrown in the mix to make this an interesting first book. My one hateful character, so far, is Tia. If she carries on with her tirades to Dirk, I would be surprised if someone doesn’t tie her to a stake on landfall night.

Perseverance required..
I originally bought this title because I really enjoy Joe Jameson's narration, however, I didn't immediately form a rapport with the characters and considered returning - I am pleased I persevered! By the end, my interest in the destiny of the main characters has been peaked sufficiently enough to ensure that I purchase the second before too long. Had I read the book, I might not have finished it but Joe Jameson's marvellous performance skills spurred me on and I found myself ever more drawn in as the story unfolded.

Long and drawn out first book
It’s not a bad story line, it’s just long and drawn out out with very little action. I guess the author wants to build the character back stories but some action and adventure would help. I was mainly drawn to this book by the narrator who agin did a great job but Joe seemed to struggle with keeping the story exciting.
