With strength, wit, rakish charm, and a talking sword named Hrym, Rodrick has all the makings of a classic hero - except for the conscience. Instead, he and Hrym live a high life as scoundrels, pulling cons and parting the weak from their gold. When a mysterious woman invites them along on a quest into the frozen north in pursuit of a legendary artifact, it seems like a prime opportunity to make some easy coin - especially if there's a chance for a double-cross. Along with a hooded priest and a half-elven tracker, the team sets forth into a land of witches, yetis, and ancient magic. As the miles wear on, however, Rodrick's companions begin acting steadily stranger, leading man and sword to wonder what exactly they've gotten themselves into...
From Hugo Award-winner Tim Pratt, author of City of the Fallen Sky, comes a bold new tale of ice, magic, and questionable morality set in the world of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

"Play Pathfinder, never thought about reading it"
Most definitely, I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. I bought it because I was looking for a light fantasy novel and it's got rogues, and well I love me some rogues.
I love the world, I've been playing a lot of the Pathfinder campaigns with my gaming group and reading this I hear about places and events from the campaigns that intertwine into the story wonderfully, not to mention the creatures and locations that are all too familiar to me as well.
He did a great job, each character had a distinct voice and they were a pleasure to listen to. Though I just picked up the sequel to this book: Liar's Island and I was disappointed to find there was a new narrator and well... I don't like the new guy as much.
I listened to 3/4 of the book in one sitting, it was enjoyable but it was light, it wasn't a book that I couldn't wait to get back into or dreamt about what would happen next. It was just a light enjoyable read.
The sorceress' character was based off of a disturbing and disgusting character from the X-Files (s2 e20, "Humbug"), which was excellently incorporated into the Pathfinder world. Pratt does a pretty job of putting an incompetent thief in compromising situations.
William Dufris performance brings the characters of this story more than to life. In fact I doubt anyone could ever do these characters the justice he has. Even the cadence while narration adds to the characters and the story.
The story itself is a great tale, with characters that stand out on their own, who's mere conversations add to the entertainment of the story.
Not just gamers would enjoy this tale, and anyone who likes entertainment will enjoy the performance given with the story.
I was captivated the entire time. Hearing the banter between sword and man was enjoyable!
"amazing couldn't put it down"
could not put it down. does an amazing job of building up relationships with the ajcreters and still weaving a great story
Loved it. The narrative is vary good too! The best Pathfinder book so far. Buy it!
"A wonderfully fun read!"
I really enjoyed the depth of character of not only Roderick and Hrym, but of the supporting cast as well. However, this is not a character study, but a rollicking adventure in the vein of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. I love the homage to Leiber's work. Well done Mr. Pratt, you have won a fan for life.
"My First Audiobook, I was NOT disappointed."
This narrator does a bloody fantastic job at doing what he does best. Every character feels unique, down to the way they talk when read by the narrator. The story is filled with suspense, regardless of how well you know the Pathfinder universe. If you have played the tabletop or have done anything involving Golarion, I suggest starting here.
"First Pathfinder book I've read/listened to"
This book kept me enthralled and entertained throughout its entirety! Would recommend it to any fantasy fan! The narrator is one of a kind and was perfect for this particular book. thumbs up and kudos to all.
"Couldn't stop listening."
If you are into Dungeons & Dragons, then this is a must have. There is a sharp plot, great characters, lots of monsters, magical weapons, and a plot twist that you must read. It's really one of those books that you stay in your car five minutes longer than you had to just because you want to get to the end of the chapter because it's so exciting.
