Summary

In this prequel to Eon, Greg Bear continues to explore the possibilities presented by the asteroid Thistledown, a remnant of a lost human civilization. The Way is a tunnel through space and time that leads to other worlds, some more like planet Earth than Earth itself. It is perhaps the most formidable discovery in Thistledown and with it come disputes as to the nature of the Way and how it should be used.

The Way can be reached only through Axis City, the only space station of Thistledown. The ruling body of Axis City, the Hexamon, has decreed that other worlds reached by The Way must be left untouched as an insurance against future needs of the human race. But then the Hexamon hear of a group of clandestine colonists who have settled on one of the new worlds.

Olmy Ap Sennon is an eager young career soldier who must go and investigate this illegal colony, and at the same time confront his own humanity. As he witnesses the hardship and beauty of the outlaw human colony, he learns what it means to struggle with war, ecological disaster, love, and death.

Not quite classic Greg Bear

I have to say that I'd ready this story way back, so I knew exactly what to expect from this story. I consider this to be right at the end of Greg Bears golden period and as such, it is a good story, but doesn't reach the heights of his pervious classics (Eon, Forge of God, Eternity).
However the narration is very good and in fact I did pick up on bits of the story that I had missed (or didn't remember) from the my first reading of the story.

Greg Bears worst

the audible "blurb" is totally misleading. wether Bear was contractually obliged to publish this we will probably never know. The most boring Greg Bear book yet. nothing like Forge of God ,Eon,or even moving Mars. Under cover agent goes to planet ,takes part in an incredibly boring journey on a survey ship to survey already " settled lands" .ship sinks, theres a small war.He goes home.the end. How he managed to stretch it out to 34(?) chapters is beyond me. Avoid.

Interesting

Was expecting something very different ie the beginning of "the way" however what I got was a whole new story with an amazing concept. Not entirely sure what to think of it however I'm glad I listened to it and will do so again. Very different from the original trilogy but a good book in its own right.

Wonderfully Bizzare

Would you listen to Legacy again? Why?

Yes, it is just plain weird. Bear has a fantastic imagiation

What did you like best about this story?

All of it. As a part of the way series it is completely different, even the writing style is different..

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I didn't enjoy it. This is what is weird. It is captivating and the writing transports you to another world but its not enjoyable, if anything I found it disturbing and confusing, both in content and writing style - this isn't a criticism as it is masterful

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Do not touch
