Summary

The end is coming.

Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him, but it’s going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm and there’s only one man who can top him. His oldest friend and his oldest enemy. It’s time for the Bloody-Nine to come home.

With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war - a secret struggle in which no-one is safe and no-one can be trusted. His days with a sword are far behind him. It’s a good thing blackmail, threats, and torture still work well enough.

Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on someone.

While the King of the Union lies on his death bed, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union. The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world. But there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law.

Bittersweet as expected, but a little unsatisfying

I think we all knew this story was going to end bittersweetly. It essentially part of the world and characters Joe has created. To start this off, the writing itself and narration is absolutely brilliant. 5/5 top quality amazing. Joe knows his area of expertise and delivers masterfully in this respect. However, this is an end to what has been a great trilogy. You are hardly ever going to keep absolutely everyone happy with how you decide to take it. Normally I tend to stay clear of spoilers in all of my reviews, but since this is a conclusion book (and considering what I've written already beforehand), I think I can be forgiven for delving into some slight spoiler. Overall, I felt really unsatisfied with the conclusions to two aspects of this entire series. The war in the north was ended rather unspectacularly. The hype behind the witch and Bethod led to nothing, and the use of the creatures didn't connect at all like it seemed to hint towards. then there's the final battle. the seed is unlocked and you see Biaz reveling in his power. you think a final battle against the true evil is about to take place. nope, just ends unceremoniously. While you do eventually find out that Biaz was behind everything, he just leaves freely with no repocussions, making everything just work out perfectly for him while everyone is left to essentially bite the bullet. Again, I know this was all meant to be bittersweet, but still, it all just felt rather grim and unsatisfying. Obviously Joe wanted the prove the point that nothing really changes, and humanity is essentially led along like sheep by the games of the very few. Although I can mostly agree with this idea it just all felt rather unsatisfying in the end. By all means, I do thoroughly recommend this book. It just as as a matter of my taste I guess I wished for something a little more epic to tie off the loose ends. But, that's just the way of it. To coin it as Logan would 'sometimes, you have to be realistic about these things.'

Grimace grimace grimace

Good story we'll narrated. Just wish a thesaurus could have been used to find different ways of saying grimace, I lost count of the times it was said, and incorrectly pronounced.

Incredible

Amazing books. The first law trilogy are perfect as audio books. This, the final book in the trilogy is excellent. First class voice acting, rich characters with lots of depth. Would recommend!

Disappointed

Tell you what I'm really disappointed because now I have to leave this story behind! What a fantastic journey it has been. This is the best fantasy trilogy I have ever read by some margin.

The narration is second to none. I compare all future narrations to these books and most come up short.

Say one thing for the First Law series, say it is written and narrated immaculately.

Loved it

This is the best listen to story so far. I have read the trilogy in the past and really enjoyed the characters, the storyline. But the way this is read is exceptional.

Near Perfect

What a trilogy!! No bad books in this trilogy, one of the best fantasy series ever.

I do secretly think the overarching battle in this story is of a certain man vs some dastardly steps, and the lengths he had to go through to finally obtain victory over them.

Great story writing

I thought I'd hate dinner if the characters but I ended up enjoying each and every one.
each character in the book feels like a real person, they're relatable even when doing barbaric and evil acts.

I would recommend this to any fantasy reader
