Summary

The end is coming.

Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him, but it’s going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm and there’s only one man who can top him. His oldest friend and his oldest enemy. It’s time for the Bloody-Nine to come home.

With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war - a secret struggle in which no-one is safe and no-one can be trusted. His days with a sword are far behind him. It’s a good thing blackmail, threats, and torture still work well enough.

Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on someone.

While the King of the Union lies on his death bed, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union. The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world. But there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law.

Excellent

Steven Pacey is probably the greatest narrator I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.

Odd ending- Writing + narration too good to care!

Hmmm. No spoilers, obviously, but this conclusion was a little bit weird. But I honestly don't know what I'd change! I've still found this trilogy immensely satisfying and SO GOOD to listen to.

Joe Abercrombie is an incredible story-TELLER, maybe not as good a story architect. But honestly Steven Pacey could read the phone book and make it high art. He's a genius.

Dark, brutal and brilliant

I was gutted when this finished. An absolutely amazing series with some greatly realised characters which are superbly acted by the narrator. I cannot recommend this enough.

Outstanding book, amazing narrator

Such an amazing book and Steven pacy has got to be one of the best narraters in the business. He does so many different amazing voices which is like reading this book for the first time all over again. If you have to listen to one audiobook, listen to the first law series.

Great conclusion to a great trilogy

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, its very good. I enjoyed the writing style, very descriptive but concise and never strayed from the plot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nine fingers! A dark character who tried to be better, the ultimate anti-hero.

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favourite?

Glockta, such a brilliant character, extremely witty and Pacey nailed it.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Twisted, dark and bloody but then 'you have to be realistic'

Any additional comments?

Brilliant trilogy with great characters the story takes you on a real journey.

Outstanding, full of rich and in depth characters

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the cast are rich and varied in context and the narration if perfect.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, once i had got throught this trilogy. I immediately set upon the 3 other books set in the same universe - also read by Steven Pacey

Any additional comments?

Joe Abercrombie's writing style added with Steven Pacey's voice talent is a perfecr match.
I have not yet started the Shattered Sea series - a little dissapointed that Steven Pacey is not the narrator but I am hoping that Ben Elliot is just as good - and judging by the reviews i will not be dissapointed

fantastic conclusion to a fantastic trilogy

The conclusion of the trilogy is the best of the three – it will not disappoint.

Story – 5/5

This is the story where all of the pieces finally come together. It has been well thought out, and there were no holes left. Each of characters developed into something completely different to what you were expecting after discovering them in the first novel.

Although the Dark comedy/whit was still prominent throughout, this novel does become a lot darker than the previous two, with plenty of battles, violence, politics and shock discoveries to keep you entertained.

This entire trilogy blew me away, and I would recommend it to any fantasy fan, and admit that I prefer this to the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R R Martin.

Performance – 5/5

Steven Pacey is one of the best narrators out there. His character acting was flawless, each having a distinctive and believable voice. His narration enhanced the dark comedy and whit of Joe Abercrombie’s writing, and I felt myself absorbed into the action scenes/battles.

Music/sound effects between scenes/chapters was a nice touch as well

Steven Pacey is superb. Will there be more Joe? I would highly recommend, especially to game of throne fans.

One of the best books I've ever listened to

Excellent storytelling excellent narration excellent character creation and plot development. Gritty and not to everyone's taste but definitely mine. If you get a chance listen to it and when I say it I mean the whole series and the next series too.
