Summary

A new episode in Feist's massively successful Riftwar saga.

From the endlessly inventive mind of one of fantasy's all-time greats comes a spellbinding new adventure featuring old favourites Jimmy, Locklear, and Pug.

It is nine years on from the aftermath of Sethanon. There has been peace awhile, and it's been needed. But news is feeding through to the people of the Kingdom of the Isles that deadly forces are stirring on the horizon. The bringer of the latest tidings is Gorath, a moredhel (dark elf).

The bloodletting has started. Nighthawks are murdering again. Politics is a dangerous, cut-throat game once more. At the root of all this unrest lie the mysterious machinations of a group of magicians known as The Six.

Meanwhile, renegade Tsurani gem smugglers, a rival criminal gang to the Mockers led by someone known only as The Crawler, and traitors to the crown are all conspiring to bring the Kingdom of the Isles to its knees.

Vintage Feist

Although this story could be enjoyed as a stand alone book, I absolutely recommend reading the previous Riftwar Cycle books in order. At a minimum read the Serpent War trilogy. Armed with this prior reading, the relationships between both groups of people and individuals will be really clear.

This book was as enjoyable as all the others. It revolves around a plot of betrayal as the title suggests, but also focusses on the three different 'races' of elves; their reticence towards each other, and history. Both old characters, e.g. Pug, Squire Jimmy, Lochlear and new; Goran the moradell and a young untrained magician have adventures together. There are epic journeys, battles both physically and mentally testing. Some characters I grew to like got killed off. I always want all the goodies to pull through, but Feist never lets you have a good story without paying some emotional currency along the way. I'm purposely not giving detail so as not to spoil the book for others.

It's a good'n!! Just get it!!

Not Good

About halfway through I looked at the reviews and saw that many people had said how poor it is. Apparently it was based on a video game and I shows. I have just listened to the whole Rift War books and have enjoyed them as much as when I read them years ago.

This is worse than by the numbers writing - I understand that books 2 and 3 are much better so perhaps Mr Feist just needed to get through the start as quickly as he could

Maybe a slight break before book 2 is needed

Cool side story to bridge the great series.

Cool side story to bridge the great series. Pleasant narration. Some of the deaths could have been described better but I am just cherry picking.

Krondor

I loved being back with some of the older characters of earlier books. I look forward to reading more about their adventures.

Feist at his best!

Feists book do exactly what they say on the tin. If you like the previous saga's in this universe, then you'll love this.
It opens up so much more scope for the universe to go into, with new characters and old favourites too.
I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to see where he goes with it!

I struggle to listen to a lot of audio books, especially in this genre. There are so many different races and accents in them, that, for me, it can be hard to listen to and/or follow. Invariably, I end up giving up after a few chapters and buying a physical copy too.

REF'S books were the opposite for me though.
I'd read the first two saga's in physical format, but started the third saga as an audiobook. After listening to the first of those, I ended buying all of the previous books in audio format and litened to them all again before continuing with the rest of them.

Of course, it helps when you have one of the best in the business narrating it for you!
Obviously when it comes to narration, it's a personal preference and, for me, Peter Joyce is one of the best multi-character narrator's around. I'd swear there were more than one person doing it.

If you like Raymond E Feist and Peter Joyce, you can't wrong with, not just this, but the previous saga's too.

Would highly recommend!!

What makes Feist’s stories so enjoyable

Feist is a master of characterisation. You grow to love his brusque, ill-humoured, quirky, cowardly, awkward characters who bring tears to your eyes or make you laugh out loud, sometimes within the space of minutes. His plot planning is impeccable and you always feel good at the end of a novel, despite the mayhem, tragedy, or disaster. I am loving the series and intent to finish them all.

Solid story and a solid performance

Yet another solid story by Feist. Peter Joyce delivering another well rounded performance as well.

Another story that lost its way

The story was trundling quite boringly along, but survivable... and then even the author got bored and decided to write some nonsense scenes in to drag the tale some different direction. But the contrivance were just too stupid for me to care to listen any more. Boy his work has fallen off a cliff. I won't be back, and I read dozens of the original works.
