Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Lovecraft in 1
I had so much fun listening to this. I was new to the author but for sure will be listening to more from him. The turn of phrase he has is truly reminiscent of Douglas Adams and I'm surprised I hadn't come across him before. Fantastic ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Well performed and entertaining
Nicholas Guy Smith performs this book very well. It is almost like he is not there, his acting is so natural.
The stories are tightly written and set in a world similar to the Hammer films. The characters are good, dialogue amusing and plots interesting.

Unexpectedly delightful
I do enjoy fantasy and some sci-fi, though I have no interest in the modern zombie/vampire entertainment offering. But on the strength of the previous reviews and as it is included in the membership catalogue, I decided to give Johannes Cabal a go. I am so pleased I did.
The style and intelligence of Jonathan L Howard's writing, the amusing stories and characterization of Johannes as almost an innocent soul, in all its darkness, was absolutely delightful. The necromancer and zombie elements are so lightly intertwined in the stories, whilst remaining the underlying main theme, and the plots so cleverly deviced, that even someone with no patience for such things can fall in love with Johannes and his adventures.
Whether I would have enjoyed reading the book as much as I did listening to it, I don't know. Nicholas Guy Smith was perfect for these stories. His matter-of-fact, slightly bemused and ever so slightly naïve tone, was perfect for Johannes. He gave every character a full life and made it such a pleasure to listen to. If he is the reader of other JL Howard books I'll give them a go too.

Loved it
This was an introductory-offer freebie so I wasn’t expecting too much, and didn’t really fancy it going from the description, but unfortunately I’m now going to have to spend some pennies on the rest, as this was excellent…! The stories were witty and well, written, and the voice artist was really very good 🙂

Like Supernatural genre? Then get this...
If you like the whole supernatural genre, the reach back to late 19th/early 20th century characters and domains, then give this a try. A collection of short stories to introduce you to the Necromancer, it shows the style of writing from the author; his humour and prose is a lot of fun and the stories are original and dramatic.

A brilliant romp into the world of Necromancy
Beautifully written and beautifully read, this was a light-heated but elegantly "gothic" series of stories. Very compelling listening.
