Summary

The #1 Audible bestseller from the author of The Stone Man (shortlisted for the Audible Audiobook of the Year Award 2015)

There are hangovers, there are bad hangovers, and then there's waking up inside someone else's head. Thirty-something bartender Charlie Wilkes is faced with this dilemma when he wakes up to find himself trapped inside The Black Room - a space consisting of impenetrable darkness and a huge, ethereal screen floating in its center. It is through this screen that he sees the world of his female host, Minnie.

How did he get there? What has happened to his life? And how can he exist inside the mind of a troubled, fragile, but beautiful woman with secrets of her own? Uncertain whether he's even real or if he's just a figment of his host's imagination, Charlie must enlist Minnie's help if he is to find a way out of The Black Room, where the light of the screen goes out every time Minnie closes her eyes….

In The Darkness, That's Where I'll Know You tells the complete story of The Black Room, parts one to four. It contains all of the adventures of Charlie and Minnie, guaranteed to keep the listener on the edge of his or her seat.

Highly recommended

A friend once summed up the quality I like so much in Richard Matheson's writing as "Ordinary people in extraordinary situations." The same applies to Luke Smitherd's writing, which explains why I've binged my way through all of his books on Audible.

It's hard to pin a genre to these ; they're not really full on sci fi or fantasy, rather they're the journey of believable, engaging everyday characters dealing with a world inexplicably tilted on its axis.

Whatever genre it is, it works for me.

Original and engaging.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. It was a unique story and and engaging and entertaining listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This was not a book with a large cast. The main character Charlie was probably my favourite. He was a likeable everyman who found himself entangled in some crazy happenings and dealt with them pretty well.

What about Luke Smitherd’s performance did you like?

I usually avoid books narrated by their authors, as 9 times out of 10 they are awfully performed, but I'm glad I took a chance on this one as Luke Smitherd gave a competent performance. He was not the best narrator I've ever listened to but he was far from the worst. I even think he improved as the story progressed. I'll be happy to listen to his other books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really but there was a lot of moments when I was completely sucked into the story so I guess that is a good sign.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this unusual sci-fi/horror.

This needs to be a Movie (Totally original)

Would you listen to In The Darkness, That's Where I'll Know You: The Complete Black Room Story again? Why?

Yes of course and i will be doing but not before i gobble up more work from this talented Author.

What was one of the most memorable moments of In The Darkness, That's Where I'll Know You: The Complete Black Room Story?

No Spoilers, all i will say is when the penny dropped and the story explained the many questions i had whilst listening

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Too many to name but one that sticks out was the date scene

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes completely

Any additional comments?

If you're anything like me and get a little fed up with the same sort of stories and want to experience a very different refreshing concept, still with gripping drama, lots of mystery and want to go on a different kind of journey then there really is no need to be still reading this. What are you waiting for ?. Best credit i have spent in a very long time. (Apart from The Stone Man) Off to purchase the rest of this authors books.

Something different from the same old same old

Loved this book. Different from anything I have read before. Loved the characters and cared for them. Loved the narration too. I have also read the stone man by the same author and would recommend that book too. The two stories are very different and unlike anything I have previously read.

A fantastic book,something different, Brilliant.

I have never read anything like this before and I get through a lot of books. The fact that the writer is also the narrator means the characters sound as he wanted and not someone else's interpretation. The possibly baffling storyline is explained so clearly it is easy to follow all the complexities and will have you desperate to carry on with the story when you have to do something else.
The ending actually made me cry, something no other book has done,I became so involved with the story I just didn't want it to end.

Blew my expectations out of the water!

Around the halfway point of this book I began to periodically sigh to myself - "This is a great concept, really intriguing, hugely original.. but is it going THERE? Really?.."

The answer - No. I'm an idiot. A massive idiot.

This was by far one of my favourite listens this year. A great concept, a well crafted story and a definite emotional impact at both ends of the spectrum that I'll be feeling for a while. I can't say much without spoiling anything, but I had such emotional responses to characters here that I haven't experienced in a very long time!

The cover has a review which mentions a number of genres and it really does cover them all without truly be confined by a classification, I can see this appealing to a lot of people for different reasons and immediately recommended it to a number of friends!

Also worth noting that Luke Smitherd has been independently publishing, as well as writing and narrating this book. Loving the spirit and the narration was great too - I look forward to more!

Awesome story

Great, well tested complexity. Also, really well read by the author, even managed to sound a bit like matt addis ;0)
