Editor reviews

Hyperion, one of the most celebrated Sci-Fi novels of all time and the first book in the Hyperion Cantos series, begins in the midst of an interplanetary war in the 29th century. Five pilgrims set out to the mysterious title planet in an attempt to prevent Armageddon, but while most of the planets in the Hegemony are connected by rapid transit farcaster portals, the journey is far from safe. Modified humans known as Outsters lurk in space stations between planets, threatening the very fabric of the planetary alliance.

Winner of both the Hugo Award and the Locus Award for Best Novel, Hyperion is easily one of the most important, groundbreaking books in Sci-Fi. It incorporates favourite elements of genre — including time travel, galactic war and intricate world building — making for a listen that any space odyssey fan will love. In audio, the experience is even more immersive as you’ll hear the individual stories of the five Pilgrims, each brought vividly to life by a different narrator.

Summary

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope - and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.

Critic reviews

Hugo Award, Best Novel, 1990
Locus Award, Best Novel, 1990
"Dan Simmons has the Midas touch: Every genre he writes - whether SF, horror, mystery, historical, or thriller - he turns to gold. Hyperion and The Fall Of Hyperion set a new standard for grand-scale science fiction." (Kevin J. Anderson, author of The Saga of Seven Suns)
"Dan Simmons was a star from the outset. It was the Hyperion books that made him a superstar. The man, quite simply, is what we in the trade call a writer's writer." (Mike Resnick, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author)
Each of [the pilgrim's] stories would make a superb novella on its own. ( The New York Times Book Review, Gerald Jonas)

Hard work

I found this story hard work to get through, my frustrations coming from hearing the full name of a character whenever they spoke a line. First name is surely enough, if even at all in some cases. Can't really blame the narrator for this as he's done a good job, as did the character actors. The pilgrims stories were interesting, all based around the core theme, however with a disappointing end I can't bring myself to sit through the sequel.

A rich and expansive book, well narrated.

Having read the book a long time ago I wanted to try the audio book as I am new to audible. Its a long book that filled came in useful during lockdown. The narration is very good compared to a few others I have tried and not enjoyed purely because the American narration grinds you into submission. It must be possible to get the option of an English narrator option, but thats for other books.

This story is expansive and I liked how each of the main characters stories were told in a sequence that built the book up gradually. The overall story is very clever and so expansive but not too expansive that you can't keep up.

Really enjoyable, time for the fall of hyperion. I haven't read it and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Simply Brilliant

This is one of those rare books that I've wanted to listen to a second time and having done so I'm fairly sure I will listen a third time.
it's like a futuristic take on the Canterbury Tales and I felt as if I got to know the pilgrims well, their hopes and fears, their loves, and the powerful motivations driving each one onwards to probable doom implicit in the pilgrimage, as one by one their tales unfolded. The narration is good with different speakers providing the various voices of the characters. The plotlines require us to suspend our disbelief but the payoff is the enjoyment of the authors incredible imagination. All in all a beacon of SF writing, Dan Simmons deserves to be recognised as one of the greats of the genre.

Voices don't match the characters

The novel is amazing, but the voice actors don't always match their character, spoken dialogue often doesn't fit the written description of how it was meant to be expressed. It's annoying, especially the female voice actor - Allyson Johnson - ouch. She was poorly chosen for the part.
Reading the novel would have done the book much more justice. Sorry, Dan Simmons....

Intelligent, well crafted Sci-Fi. I loved it.

This is Canterbury Tales in space, and it is clever. Dan Simmons has achieved some brilliant characterisation in this story. There were times while listening to this book when you don't just hear it, you feel it. Which makes it such an enjoyable experience.

It loses one star because I had hoped for a slightly stronger ending, but I have already got the next book on my wishlist. So clearly that was no deterent.

Quite a lot of concentration needed here

Managed to finish listening but got very lost quite a few times. Think this might be better read as a book rather than an audio book but the performance was very good.
