Excellent story, okay narrator

What a gripping tale about drow society and the man himself, Drizzt. A great story from start to finish. The complex names really threw me off to begin with and I was genuinely concerned that I would not be able to follow the story, but it all works itself out as the tale progresses.

The narrator does an okay job of reading the story, he has a deep sullen voice, but he can been a little monotonous and struggles to give different characters a unique voice.

Favourite Book series of all time.

The Dark Elf trilogy has been my favourite book series of all time. On seeing it on the audible store I snapped it up and haven't been disappointed the narrator did an amazing job of reading out the classic by R.A Salvatore. Hope to see more books in the series reach the audible store. :-D

Origins of a legendary tabletop gaming character

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. Many of my friends know my love of fiction and gaming, particularly the imagination and fun of pen-and-paper role-playing games like D&D. Anyone familiar with D&D knows of Drizzt from Menzoberranzan, the franchise's legendary dark elf. Salvatore, through Bevine's excellent performance, brings this two-dimensional icon to life. What's not to like?

What did you like best about this story?

Adding this dimension to a much-admired gaming legend allows the reader to experience the Forgotten Realms brought to life, through the early years of one of its most memorable characters. Bevine's performance adds the right amount of suspense, darkness, elation and trepidation.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The cat. (Trying to avoid spoilers).

Any additional comments?

I particularly like this series for the reasons mentioned above, but standing alone from their D&D background I believe they make an interesting fantasy story. No prior knowledge of polyhedral dice or character sheets is required. The story stands on its own merits.

A great book and an excellent true telling

This book came after the Crystal Shard and I remember as a young man approaching the prequel trilogy with apprehension... I'm glad I picked up the book then and I'm glad I started my audible adventure with Homeland. An excellent starting point to the story and characters that I have come to love over the years.
Victor Bevine masterfully navigates the voice delivery in such a way that you soon accept that this is how they always sounded. Instead of detracting, he manages where so many other narrators fail... he adds to the flavour, the ingredients of the book become that much, if not sweeter, then balanced.

I took out a years subscription and got the first 6 books; I guess audible has a lot to thank both Mr. Salvatore and victor Bevine alike!.

Highly recommended

I guess you either love it or hate and I hated it

I suspect you need to like dungeons and dragons or whatever game Drizzt came from to appreciate the book.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about D&D so the story fell flat for me. I didn't like a single character in the book including Drizzt, for a time I thought I would like Drizzt's father but no I ended up being disappointed in him too.

The plotlines seemed overly long and tedious and in the end I skipped to the end to see what happened and it all unravelled pretty much as expected but I just couldn't bring myself to care. I think the underlying premise could have made a good story but for some reason I couldn't get into it. I guess nearly 11 hours without a single smile or laugh can be a bit mind numbing in the end.

My suggestion would be give it a go as lots of people seem to love the stories. But make sure you listen before the year is up so you can return it if you don't like it. Not like me who kept putting it off and then when I did listen to it, it was too late to return and I am stuck with the trilogy as I got them all in a deal - Ooops :(

Awful 'narrator'

I have read most of the Drizzt books and was looking forward to listening to them instead. However I was very disappointed in the narrator, who just droned the book out, with nothing really to define one character from another by voice. I will be returning the books asap. Salvatore should get these books re narrated by a decent narrator.

Slow going at times but not bad

I was eager to start this series of books and perhaps was expecting a little too much from the first book. This first book is heavily laden with the protagonists back story from birth to self discovery.

Although there is plenty of interesting parts I found it hard to ease through the story until it got to pivotal moments.

Being a d&d fan and player I was familiar with the character and setting but felt it was heavily laden with details I wasn't interested in.

On the whole a good opening book to an intriguing protagonist arc and I look towards the next in the series "exile"

Lives up to the hype

If you've ever wondered why older DM's give an exasperated sigh whenever someone rolls a Drow ranger/fighter that dual wields it's because everyone who read this book wanted to play as Drizzt, or at least something similar., and with good reason. this book gives insight into the underdark, Drow, society and why good people don't last long there.
