The New Empire intends to celebrate its victory over the Nationalists with a day that will never be forgotten.
On the high holiday of Wintertide, the empress will be married, and Degan Gaunt and the Witch of Melengar will be publically executed. Once the empress suffers a fatal accident, everything will be perfect. There is only one problem - Royce and Hadrian have finally found the Heir of Novron.

"Hair-raising escapes, flashy sword fights, and faithful friendship complete the formula for good old-fashioned escapist fun." (Publishers Weekly)
I am a 28 year old man who likes to make use of a long commute by listening to sci-fi and fantasy audiobooks
Story – 4/5
The good thing about traditional fantasy is that you always get a satisfying end. The ending wasn’t quite as I expected it to be, which made it all the more enjoyable. A few twists and turns really added a lot to the story
The one issue was the long slog to get to the ending though. I feel like it was an attempt at trying to make a series more epic than it actually is; adding a lot more than necessary. It wasn’t terrible, and I enjoyed well enough to get through it, but it wasn’t exactly spectacular either.
All in all, a solid series. I would recommend if you like easy-going traditional fantasy, rather than the more complicated gritty fantasy that seems to be the modern trope nowadays.
Tim Gerard Reynolds did quite a reasonable job of this audiobook. His voice acting is good, and each character is distinct. He sometimes describes the hopeless/danger scenes as if they are trivial, and the experience could be enhanced more with a change of tone/mood, but it didn’t spoil the story too much for me and after a while, I just got used to his style anyway.
Overall – 4/5
Finished all of the audio books in the series. Won't provide a literary review of the work - beyond saying i like the writing. Good characters, nice detail, excellent plot development, epic in scope - some genuine laugh out loud moments alongside the gripping elements of intrigue and suspense. I like this genre, have read widely and can honestly say Michale j Sulivan delivers. I approached the series in order of publication - will be buying the prequals in fairly short order.
This series was so good it took me a while to decide where to go next.
It absorbed me so well, the story stayed with me for several day after finishing it,
If your fed up with the trails and tibulations of life then listen to this audio book series. it's complete escapism, .
"Great story. All threads perfectly ended."
It is difficult to stop listening. Perfect performance and storyline difficult to predict although I made mistake of reading 'Age of myth' first, so I was able to guess few things.
"One of my favorite"
All series fall to place. I loved it. Twist at the end, main story, performance, characters. I was not able to guess how it will end.
