Publisher's Summary

Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.

When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.

Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

i feel there were two problems in this book for me :
1- too much self dialog , and self appreciation
2- an instant, lacking ,and sometime boring love
so i would probably change the two things above

Would you be willing to try another book from Terry Maggert? Why or why not?

i would say sure , his writing is pretty good , i really liked his idea of a modern world with paranormal aspects , and the events which really kept me hooked until the end

What about Erin Spencer’s performance did you like?

Erin Spencer's voice gave the character it's personality , i really could see what type of person she is , her voice gave the events the emotional dimension in the story

Could you see Halfway Dead being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

i think i will be more enthusiastic if it turned to a cartoon series or maybe an anime

    Any additional comments?

my thanks to Terry Maggert for giving me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review
thanks Terry , it was an excellent read for me

I wanted to like it, but I just could not get into it. I don't know if it was the story or the narrator. I did receive this for free for my honest and unbiased opinion.

    Story
    "A fun witchy book!"

I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.

The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.

I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!

I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.

The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.

So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.

This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.

*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

    "Likeable Story"

I liked the story but there could have been more about magic in it. Not much to the ending after such a build up. The narrator was really good.

    Story
    "A mysterious "Witchy" tale..."

I received this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This story is about a woman Carlie, who happens to really be a witch is needed to help find a hidden area in the deep mystical forest for destinations unknown. This book is a witty, paranormal read with danger, suspense and Gus! What is a witch without her favorite cat? What will she find? who will be with her? So many unanswered questions. This is where I tell you, you have to read the book to answer these questions...

The author, Terry Maggert did a good job writing this Halfway Witchy tale. It has a good story line, a surprising plot and lots of mystery and fun. The narrator, Erin Spencer delivers us a flawless reading with multiple voices and loads of excitement. Good job both of you!

    Story
    "Very Enjoyable!"

I really enjoyed the fun, fresh voice of this novel. Carley has spunk and charm and a heart of gold. The narration is spot on. If you enjoy light, clean paranormal witchy stuff - and the great outdoors - you'll enjoy this too!

My only real disappointments were 1) sometimes I was left with too little information to fully grasp or infer what had happened and 2) the next book is not yet on audible. :(

I think I've found a new favorite author. The MC is kickass but still fallible and the story was original enough to keep me interested.

Where does Halfway Dead rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is definitely one of the better audio books as far as the right choice for narrator and a good overall story.

What did you like best about this story?

Love the little nuances that make Carlie a unique witch.

Have you listened to any of Erin Spencer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to any of Erin's other performances.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At the end I was left with way too many questions and actually made sure that I hadn't missed any of the end somehow.

    Any additional comments?

Carlie is such a likable, little witch that you can't help but fall in love with this series. I listened to the Audible version and the narrator was a perfect fit. She is exactly what you'd expect for Carlie and can handle the other characters just fine. My favorite quote from this book is: "I'm pro waffles." That pretty much sums it all up, except for the magic, beasties, vampire, and a crazy adventure that left me a few questions short of a clean ending. More than ready for book two now!

    Story
    "Waffles and Witches!"

I got the upgraded version of this book and had the pleasure of listening to it through Audible. I was very impressed. I love a sassy witch and Maggert delivers one to me. Carlie is a fun main character and she is funny and full of sass. I loved her attitude and always wanting to help. I was extremely impressed with how much I was pulled into the story. I will be anxious to read the rest of the series. The narrator did a fantastic job. Her voice was fast paced and soothing. She had a great voice for Carlie. This is the first book I have read from this author and I'm glad I found him.
