Publisher's Summary

Carlie McEwan loves many things. She loves being a witch. She loves her town of Halfway, NY - a tourist destination nestled on the shores of an Adirondack lake. Carlie loves her enormous familiar, Gus, who is 25 pounds of judgmental Maine Coon cat, and she positively worships her grandmother, a witch of incredible power and wisdom. Carlie spends her days cooking at the finest - and only - real diner in town, and her life is a balance between magic and the mundane, just as she likes it.

When a blond stranger sits at the diner counter and calls her by name, that balance is gone. Major Pickford asks Carlie to lead him into the deepest shadows of the forest to find a mythical circle of chestnut trees, thought lost to forever to mankind. There are ghosts in the forest, and one of them cries out to Carlie across the years. Come find me.

Danger, like the shadowed pools of the forest, can run deep. The danger is real, but Carlie's magic is born of a pure spirit. With the help of Gus, and Gran, and a rugged cop who really does want to save the world, she'll fight to bring a ghost home, and deliver justice to a murderer who hides in the cool, mysterious green of a forest gone mad with magic.

    "quit intresting"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

i feel there were two problems in this book for me :
1- too much self dialog , and self appreciation
2- an instant, lacking ,and sometime boring love
so i would probably change the two things above

Would you be willing to try another book from Terry Maggert? Why or why not?

i would say sure , his writing is pretty good , i really liked his idea of a modern world with paranormal aspects , and the events which really kept me hooked until the end

What about Erin Spencer’s performance did you like?

Erin Spencer's voice gave the character it's personality , i really could see what type of person she is , her voice gave the events the emotional dimension in the story

Could you see Halfway Dead being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

i think i will be more enthusiastic if it turned to a cartoon series or maybe an anime

    Any additional comments?

my thanks to Terry Maggert for giving me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review
thanks Terry , it was an excellent read for me

    Story
    "A fun witchy book!"

I went into this without reading the blurb or any reviews, and I have to say that it was amazing!! The blurb sums up the story so I won't add anything else in case I spoil something. So let's get straight to my thoughts.

The last book I read by this author captured my attention, but not as much as this!! Right from the start I became invested with Carlie and wanted to know her story. So many times the witchy books I read have the MC either suddenly coming into powers or not liking the fact that she is a witch and wanting to be normal. Not so here!! Carlie loves being a witch and embraces it every day. She uses her magic all the time and I loved that about her! She knew who she was and stuck by it.

I loved Carlie anyway. She was witty, strong, capable and a no nonsense type of girl. She helps people with her magic and loves it. Not officially of course, because no one believes in magic, but if a person leaves a note with what is needed, Carlie will help as best she can. I also loved her spirit, she is spunky and brave. So many times I was laughing out loud at what she was thinking or saying!!

I also loved Carlies relationship with her Gran. She shows such respect and love to her! Carlies Gran is quite the woman, powerful, and like Carlie herself, a no nonsense type.

The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I loved the whole saving the old trees thing, the vampire in the woods, the lake and I pretty much loved everything about it!!! It was well written and developed and held my attention till the end. It's full of magic, fantastical creatures, mystery, secrets, legends and plenty of action! I flew through the book and didn't want to take out my earbuds.

So ya, I loved this!! From it's engaging characters to it's engrossing plot, Half Dead is a must read!! I do so hope we see more from this world because I would love to dive in again.

This is the first book I've listened to by Erin Spencer, and it won't be my last. She captured Carlie perfectly and brought across her fiery spirit. She was easy to listen to and really made the story come alive.

    "Likeable Story"

I liked the story but there could have been more about magic in it. Not much to the ending after such a build up. The narrator was really good.

    "A mysterious "Witchy" tale..."

I received this audio book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review. This story is about a woman Carlie, who happens to really be a witch is needed to help find a hidden area in the deep mystical forest for destinations unknown. This book is a witty, paranormal read with danger, suspense and Gus! What is a witch without her favorite cat? What will she find? who will be with her? So many unanswered questions. This is where I tell you, you have to read the book to answer these questions...

The author, Terry Maggert did a good job writing this Halfway Witchy tale. It has a good story line, a surprising plot and lots of mystery and fun. The narrator, Erin Spencer delivers us a flawless reading with multiple voices and loads of excitement. Good job both of you!

"Voice matches the POV of character"

Narrator Erin Spencer gives Carlie first POV that little bit of truth, light, sweetness, compassion, snark, and overall sense of what I was feeling while listen to Carlie's commentary.

Carlie has become one of my little heroes. She has the snark that makes me laugh or just smile a bit. She has the compassion of a very old and wise soul. She brings a touch of purity to the midst of the situation. She has a gift and happily shares it.

I found nothing more than Carlie, Gus, and Gran with this new read, with a new author, using my old stand by of the paranormal-supernatural world. I love the setting of a New York town. The closeness makes it comfortable. I want more adventures with Carlie. Her relationship with Gus and Gran was the stabilizing support she needed in her life. Kudoos to Carlie. Thank you Terry for such a delightful story.

    Story
"I love Gran and her Carlie!"

Set in Halfway, New York, Carlie works at the only real diner in town. She has a large, ornery cat named Gus, and she treasures her grandmother. Oh, and she’s also a witch. Things were pretty quiet until a few restless spirits and a determined cop started pestering Carlie. Now there is a child’s spirit trapped in the depths of the forest that she must free or learn to live with a troubled conscience.

I had a lot of fun with this book. Carlie is a character I want to be friends with. She’s independent but not prickly about having friends who show they care about her. She also takes care of her things in the belief that they will be there, in good condition, to take care of her. It’s an idea that I strive for even if I don’t often obtain it. Carlie doesn’t hesitate to show folks that she can take care of herself and she doesn’t apologize for whatever bruises a heavy-handed person might receive from her. Yet she isn’t some alpha female always feeling she has to fight to maintain her place in the world. Over all, she’s really well balanced and I really like that about her.

My inner biologist loved the bit about the long-lost chestnut species. They were key in locating the source of the troubled spirits. The first third of the book is spent in the small town of Halfway (there are wendigo!) but the rest of the story is spent in the woods. Get your nature hiking boots out folks! Carlie and Major Pickford, a cop involved in the case, set out to find this mysterious source of unsettled spirits. My one teensy spoiler is that along the way they meet Wulfric who I think will continue on in the series. Wulfric’s existence in the woods brings up plenty of questions but he also supplies plenty of answers. Carlie and crew have quite the fight ahead of them. Not all will come out of it OK.

I was truly surprised by what they found in the woods. First, there was Wulfric (but I won’t spoil why he’s such a surprise). The next surprise was a kind of lost legends surprise. I found it clever and amusing at the same time. Finally, there is an epic battle near the end. For the first in the series, I wasn’t expecting that level of a fight but in retrospect, it does fit. Carlie isn’t some newly minted witch. No, she’s had years of training and has a good idea of what she can and can’t do. All around, it was a great ride and a satisfying read.

I received a free copy of this book via The Audiobookworm.

The Narration: Erin Spencer was a good pick for this book. She mad a very practical Carlie. I also liked her accent for Wulfric. Her male voices were believable and she did a great job imbuing scenes with emotion as needed.

"Great start to a witchy series"
    Any additional comments?

Halfway Dead is an awesome start to what is looking to be a promising series. Our main character Carlie is a witch, a tiny but very powerful girl. She has a huge cat, which makes her awesome in my book (my parents have a huge Maine Coon too, hmm). She is loyal and supportive to those who need her, and those who care for her. I love her relationship with her Grandma and her independence as well.

I also liked how this plot was complicated and twisty. Nothing was as it seemed, and things kept getting more and more bizarre as Carlie got involved and started unraveling threads. Of course, when long-term family history secrets start getting involved and things becomes personal, that’s when the real fun begins. What can I say, I also liked our half Viking half Vampire friend. I am super curious about him, and looking forward to seeing him more in the future books (hopefully).

As for the audio, it was great! I loved the voice and the pacing was just right. The voices, tones, and attitude fit each character well and I was pulled into the story. I love when an audio narrator just makes it effortless to listen. I’ve listened to quite a few where the narrator is distracting – not the case here.

Overall, definitely an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to continuing the series.

Note: I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions.

    "Fun Read"

I chose to listen to this audiobook after receiving a free copy from Audiobookworm Promotions. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

I always enjoy a good mystery but it's even better when the main character is different from the norm. In this case, Carlie is a witch. She's young, cute, single, and very serious about her craft. Witchcraft has been in her family for generations and she has some awesome magical powers.

This is the first book by Terry Maggert that I have read (or listened to) but it won't be the last. I have a found another favorite author! I enjoy his writing and it was difficult for me to turn this audiobook off once I started listening to it.

Carlie's character is unique and likable. She's not perfect which makes her more realistic. Jim, the detective who accompanies her into the forest, is interesting. He's not magical at all; in fact, he has just learned that magic exists, but he is observant and calm at all times.

Erin Spencer did a fantastic job narrating this book. Her voice is perfect as Carlie and she changed her tone just enough so that I knew when someone was speaking. I am looking forward to listening to her narrate the next book about Halfway.

I definitely recommend Halfway Dead, especially if you like reading paranormal books with a bit of mystery and humor.
