Summary

From the author of Vacillian and The Lights of Barbrin, these three novella-length tales explore psychological themes latent in the classic Grimm versions. Rather than presenting two-dimensional "good" heroines pitted against "evil" step-mothers, Grim portrays fully realized characters grappling with shame and self-doubt, suffering at the hands of mothers best thought of as narcissistic in modern terminology. Due to their dark themes and some graphic sexual material, these tales are not for the faint of heart and are unsuitable for children.

Needs a different narrator

I really like adult fairytales, they are such brilliant story’s and the original tales are so much darker than Disney would have us believe! In the hands of a different narrator this book could have been very good. However I’m baffled by the choice of a male narrator! All three of the story’s are focused around female protagonists and two of them are either told from the perspective of a woman or actually narrated by a female character. It needed a female voice, I’d recommend this book to read but probably not to listen to.
