Summary

Duma Key combines the appeal of Cell and Lisey's Story - two of Stephen King's most successful novels of all time - to take the legendary author to a whole new level. Read by John Slattery.

Duma Key is the engaging, fascinating story of a man who discovers an incredible talent for painting after a freak accident in which he loses an arm.

He moves to a "new life" in Duma Key, off Florida's West Coast - a deserted strip, part beach, part weed-tangled reef, owned by a patroness of the arts whose twin sisters went missing in the 1920s. Duma Key is where out-of-season hurricanes tear lives apart and a powerful undertow lures lost and tormented souls.

Here, Freemantle is inspired to paint the amazing sunsets. But soon the paintings become predictive, even dangerous. Freemantle knows the only way forward is to discover what happened to the twin sisters and uncover the secret of the strange old lady who holds the key.

The story is about friendship, about the bond between a father and his daughter, and about memory, truth and art. It is also is a metaphor for the life and inspiration of a writer, and an exploration of the nature, power, and influence of fiction.

Please note: this is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Critic reviews

"Written by the man who once memorably called himself 'the literary equivalent of a Big Mac with fries' - this is supreme, page-turning storytelling; the sort of popular fiction that comes along only rarely and only from a writer at the top of his game." (Daily Mail)

A audio book hard to leave alone

I never really thought I liked Sephen King novels, but since joining audible, I can say my mind as been changed. Duma Keys was a brilliant , enthralling story , which I found impossible to leave alone. Well written , well read , great from first word to last.

King finds yet another wonderful area to work

Not since The Picture of Dorien Grey has there been such a brilliant work on magical artistry.

Edgar Freemantle suffers a desperate loss of his arm after a catastrophic accident. After the surgery he was unable to continue in his work, which made him angry with everyone and everything. His amputated right arm continued to give him terrible pain, and even worse itching. He swore at his wife, and demanded that she took care of him totally, eventually she divorces him. He could not cope with the loss of his marriage, so he moves to Duma Key and takes up painting. The artist's world is rocked by his unparallelled talent, and galleries all over the world want to show his work.

Friends and family stampede to buy the paintings, wanting to show off their friends work. It soon becomes clear that there is something very wrong with the paintings, and the people who have bought certain paintings start to die - including his beloved daughter. Could he get the remaining paintings back, before their curse could kill anyone else?

Brilliant narrator

An excellent book by Mr King. But for me it was the narrator who completely sold it for me. I listened to this whilst jogging on holiday in Menorca and maybe the peaceful beautiful scenary I was lucky to experience has coloured my opinion of this book, or maybe not! It was simply brilliant. Stephen King returns to 'scarier' topics in this book and I liked that. A must listen.

Worth a listen

I enjoyed the print version of this book very much, but the audio version isn't as sinister, I'm afraid. I think it's because King wrote this one in short (VERY short, sometimes) chapters, which work in print but not in audio. That said, it's a good story and has kept me entertained over two very long car journeys.

duma key stephen king

A good story and like stephen king you can picture every bit of this book, but when you think something is going to happen and it doesn't - i was very disappointed with the ending, not his best book, not scary at all.

Love this king novel and have read it at least 5 times and listened to it twice now. The narrator is brilliant.

Not my favourite. My mind wandered

I’ve been a “constant reader” since a teenager in the 80’s and love nearly all of SK’s work. This is one of the exceptions. A meandering over wordy story for me. I was glad when it ended. This and Lissy’s Story are the two I’ve avoided as I always felt they wouldn’t be for me. I was right on both accounts.

The narration

Not sure about this SK. Doesn’t feel his storyline is up to his usual standards. Found myself feeling grateful when it concluded.

Hugely disappointing and I love Stephen King books

I came to this book after listening to multi-character books like The Stand, Under The Dome, Mr Mercedes / Bill Hodges trilogy and found it to be very slow paced without much story and with very few characters.

I have no sympathetic connection with our one-armed hero, probably due to the abrasive nature of the narration but three hours into the book our hero is still largely on his own with his thoughts and with very few characters that engage me. In fact the first two hours it is mainly just him without anything really happening.

I have abandoned this book at 5 hours. No doubt I shall return to it at some point since I have purchased it and will want my monies worth from that, but any book that I have to abandon due to boredom is a miss for me... and yet I am a massive Stephen King fan. I just can't fathom what went wrong with this one.

My partner has also been listening to this whilst semi-napping and was so surprised when he asked who wrote it and I said Stephen King, that he said, "Are you sure?" Says it all huh?
