Publisher's Summary

Pellar is an orphan taken in by Masterharper Zist. Though born mute, Pellar is a gifted tracker, and when Zist sets off to take over as harper for Natalon's coal-mining camp, Pellar - along with his fire-lizard, Chitter - joins him on a secret mission of his own: to find out if reported thefts of coal are the work of the Shunned, criminals condemned to a life of wandering and hardship.

Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents' crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again.

Life is particularly tough for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.

As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn't care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.

Cristov is Tarik's son. Dishonored by his father's treachery, the boy feels he must make amends, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.

When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread. But Tenim has a murderous plan to turn tragedy to his own advantage, and only Pellar, Halla, and Cristov can stop him - and ensure that there will be a future for all on the world of the Dr...

What the Critics Say

:While it allegorizes the risks of mining fossil fuels and the horrors of slave labor, this coming-of-age fantasy offers suitable dragon play for all ages." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Something missing"

As a long-time Pern fan, I was eager to listen to these latest works.
While there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the story, and the narration is very good, I didn't feel the connection to the characters that I did with previous works. Having recently listened to the Harper Hall trilogy (Dragonsinger, Dragonsong and Dragondrums) the difference is very noticeable.

    "really hard to get into."

not the most easy to listen to narrator and I struggled my way through this. I kind of enjoyed the story but after loving other stories of Pern so much this pales into the background

    "Revisiting Pern"
Would you listen to Dragon's Fire again? Why?

I enjoyed the story and characterisation of the characters.I enjoy spending time on Pern.

What other book might you compare Dragon's Fire to, and why?

It reminded me of other Pern stories.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Dick Hill's enjoyable voice acting creates a good atmosphere and its easy to forget that I was listening to the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could get immersed in the story and simply drift along with it. Its too long for one sitting however its easy to pop back into the Pern world.

"Glad this story is going on"
Would you listen to Dragon's Fire again? Why?

yes, the pern series is amazing.

What did you like best about this story?

The dragons. I've always loved this series for the amazing dynamic between the dragons and their riders, who doesn't dream of having a psychically linked mythological best friend on a non destroyed and polluted planet!

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    no

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

Todd is not as talented as his mother but he still does a good job. I try to keep him seperate in my mind from his mother, and not judge him too harshly. I'm sure his mother could never have completely shared the pern in her mind with anyone no matter how hard she tried. He does a fantastic job of keeping us fed with pern stories and I for one am so glad that he continued it as I was just not ready to let pern go!

"First half of book repeat of dragon kin"

I really like the story but the first half of the book is the story of dragon kin but from a different perspective the author could have Easley stared the story after the mining accident and you wouldn't have missed much

    "Not up to snuff"

Todds writting is no where near rhe quality of his mother's. stories are weaker, and the vocabulary is weaker. they are worth listening to only because it is PERN. I want to know more about Pern. Unfortunately these last books don't have rhe color and vivid detail. A good readers proformace is very helpful.

"Sorry, Todd, you don't measure up"
Would you ever listen to anything by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey again?

I enjoyed the early Pern Books wholeheartedly and adored the characters and plot points. Those with Todd tend to fade from my memory.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Dick Hill?

I would not be swayed to by a book it saw his name, nor would I avoid it. He is adequate.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Hope it would get better..... Disappointment it did not.

    Any additional comments?

After trying to read one of the mother son combinations and listening to another ... I think I'll stop trying to cover the new Pern material and return to the older books.

    "As great as ever"

I am so glad that Mother and Son joined to write this story. It was as engaging as any Pern novel I have read before. The characters were as real to me as Sorka Hanrahan or Lessa. A most enjoyable read!!!
