Summary

Billy Halleck, guter Ehemann, Vater und erfolgreicher New Yorker Anwalt, lebt mit seiner Familie in Fairview, Connecticut. Er schätzt - wie seine Nachbarn - Geld, Sex und gutes Essen. Letzteres so sehr, dass er mehr als 50 Pfund Übergewicht hat. Doch dann fährt Billy in einem Moment der Unachtsamkeit eine alte Zigeunerin tot. Und wird, als er vor Gericht straflos davonkommt, von ihrem Vater verflucht. "Dünner", flüstert der uralte Mann und streicht dem dicken Anwalt fast zärtlich mit einem Finger über die Wange. Fortan nimmt Billy ab, so viel er auch isst. Seine anfängliche Freude darüber verwandelt sich in Entsetzen, als er sich immer mehr dahinschwinden sieht. Schließlich ist er so verzweifelt, dass er sich auf ein letztes gefährliches Wagnis einlässt.
