Summary

January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

Fantastic read

I came across this during an e ploration of the Franklin Expedition and why it holds such a place in modern culture despite being nearly 200 years old.
This story with it claustrophobic fear of being blocked by the ice and the horror of an unseen thing does a great deal to answer that question. But besides that it is a hypnotic read.
If you are looking for a good scare during the short winter days of the lower latitudes this is the one for you.

Totally gripping

Utterly immersive, I felt as though I was at Gruhuken myself. This story will stay with me for a long time.

Fantastic

Very good. Similar to the terror. Narration was fantastic and definitely helped the story.

Super horror story

I read this as a book ages ago and enjoyed it so much that I got the audiobook. Loved this too. Don’t listen to it alone in the dark … or a faceless thing may come for you

Moody, stormy, creepy, excellent

This was a relatively simple ghost story that the author didn't feel the need to complicate with scores of characters and stupid plot twists.
It's well rounded, genuinely unsettling in parts and has a "just right" feeling about it.
The narrator absolutely polished off a very class act.

Chilling and intense.

This is an excellent ghost story, but more so one of the most in depth and intense descriptions of loneliness I have ever read. Excellent narration and a spellbinding story. Highly reccomend!

Darkly gripping

Beautifully described and thick with the emotion of what it might be like to be in the far north. A detailed picture painted of the environment and the inward machinations of the soul.

Spine chilling

I read this a number of years ago and wanted another round…did not let me down. I’m currently at home, alone, at the age of 38 putting all the lights on so I don’t feel so terrified

Gripping

Slow to start but I couldn’t turn it off once it got going. I even went back to the beginning and re-listened to the prologue.
