Publisher's Summary

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can't leave the grounds because she's responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans - an alpha-strain werewolf - and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she's facing is unlike anything she's ever encountered before. It's smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

    "A Slow Read"

I found this book so slow, calm and uneventful. The world and characters was limited, as well as the story. Throughout the book, you have a feeling that there is a prequel or otherwise necessity for an explanation as the characters and their circumstances. It's not that it was so dry and boring, it's just that it was slow.

Having read a range of other sci-fi books, this one lacked sufficient imagination and the allure of sci-fi books in general. I've attempted to read other books by this author and I have come to the conclusion that her style is not appealing to me. And as for the narrator, her slow monotone and slight twang make the book even slower. I gave the book 3 stars only because somehow, I was persuaded to read/listen to it till the end (i.e. finish it).

    Any additional comments?

I bought this on the basis of the blurb, which made it sound like fun, and the large number of good reviews.

The reviews are fully deserved, and I’m delighted to add my own. Imaginative, entertaining, full of surprises, blending elements from the supernatural, fantasy and science fiction genres.

I really enjoyed this, an excellent start to a series with three interesting characters. Ilona has a clearly-imagined fictional world full of detail, but I enjoyed her writing style which left me to fill in the visuals. She avoids information dumping by taking the reader along and giving them enough to figure things out along the way.

I bought the Audible audiobook version, well-narrated by Renee Raudman. The second book in the series will be in my possession soon, and the third as soon as it’s available from Audible.

    "Not what I had expected"

This was okay, but not at all what I had expected. The whole thing was a simply okay, nothing more. The characters were good enough but didn't really grab you, and I personally felt the whole thing was a little confused. I also really didn't like Renee Raudman's narration. Her voice is really irritating. While I did finish the story I can't say I'm inclined to get the next in the series.

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This turned out to be more sci fi than fantasy.

What could Ilona Andrews have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Great idea but just not enough detail

A good story as always with Ilona Andrews. I have not found a bad book by this author so far.

    Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the book it's tone is rather like 'The Edge Series' the tone of the book and the mellowness of the main character.

"Story was good, narrator did not fit."

I had first read this book when it came out. I loved the premise that it was an "urban fantasy" with a sci-fi twist. I am a big fan of the author, so when I saw that the second book of this series was coming out, I decided to brush up on the first one by listening to the audio version. I was a bit disappointed in the choice of narrator. Looking at other audio books from the same author, it appears as though they contract the same woman to do all their books. While she is a very fine reader, her take on the character and the accent she used just did not fit. The main character of this story is a young girl in her twenties. Although she originated from Georgia and settled down in Texas, I would almost rather the narrator not use an accent then try a southern one. Between her accent and her cadence, she sounded more like a matriarchal southern belle than a young woman in her twenties. It was hard for me to believe this character was a young woman just starting out and rather an older woman who wanted to serve lemonade and cookies to the neighborhood kids. I think that, although she may have been fine for other books, they may want to rethink this narrator for the next installment.

"Not your typical Ilona Andrews audiobook"

This wasn't your typical Ilona Andrews audiobook in that the magic system existed on a much smaller scale with it being confined to inns, but that's not to say that the world-building was by any means limited. In fact, if anything, it was larger than any of this author duo's other titles because the INNKEEPER CHRONICLES was closer to being Science Fiction than it was Urban Fantasy given that the characters originate from multiple planets. The wheel wasn't reinvented with regards to the typical paranormal beasties such as vampires & werewolves, although they did have several distinguishing traits that set them apart from other novels in this genre. Much to my dismay, a love triangle seems to be developing; however if any team is capable of making it work, it's Ilona & Gordon. The humor and writing were aces, no surprises there, and Renée Raudman's narration gave the story that extra somethin'-somethin' that keeps me choosing audio over eBook every time this trio releases something new.

"A MUST LISTEN. Promising start for a new series."

I put off reading the Kate Daniel's series by husband and wife writing team, Ilona Andrews, for years for a reason that I can not recall. The series is now one of my favorites, and their new Innkeeper series is off to a very promising start. Intelligent, likable characters portrayed in a believable world of fantasy, what is there not to like? Really, really looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

If you like Urban Fantasy, you must check out the work of this talented writing team. AND let's not forget Renee Raudman, she is an awesome narrator! She makes the characters come to life as if you are overhearing a conversation, not having someone read you a story!

"Another great book from Ilona Andrews!"
Would you listen to Clean Sweep again? Why?

Great book, interesting story. A unique melding of science fiction and paranormal. Can't wait to read more book set in this world

What was one of the most memorable moments of Clean Sweep?

I really enjoyed the ending, lath ough I was sad it was done, everything wrapped up wonderfully yet left things open for more books.

Have you listened to any of Renee Raudman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narrator did a good job, my only issue was sometimes her voice was so soothing it almost put me o sleep

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

"Becoming one of my Favorite Author Narrator combin"

I pretty much bought the book without really reading the discription. I did it because I love the Kate Daniels series. So I was expecting a book about a witch. So now comes the part that is probably said too much but here goes anyways. New twist on the vampire werewolf love triangle. The fact that they are not human hybrids but instead aliens was interesting and refreshing. It combines the two genres rather seamlessly. In some ways it makes more sense that vampires are aliens rather than a human with a disease.

I love the Inn and am completely jealous of it. I want my house to do what I tell it. Plus it kind of felt like its own character almost like a big dog.

Dina is not like Ilona's other main character Kate. She shows that she has a soft warm side from the begging. You learn about her tough as nails other side slowly. I could see myself being friends with her.

Sean on the other had does remind me a little of Curran. Which may be unavoidable with the whole Were thing. This is not a bad thing though. It is nice to see a guy give a crap. Plus it makes for some funny moments between Dina and him.

Renee does a great job once again of making the book come to life. Sometimes I have problems listening to a narrator who voices a series I have listened to voice a new one. Sometimes it can make it a little confusing. It actually knocks me out of the story when the voices sound too much like another character from a different book. I did not run into this with Clean Sweep. Renee did a great job.

I am hoping that this will become a series because I really enjoyed the characters I would love to get to know them better. I do hope that the triangle thing ends quickly I am not a huge fan of love triangles. By this review you can probably see which guy I hope she picks.

    "Totally entertaining"

As usual Ilona Andrews has written another winning story, and Renee Raudman does an excellent job at bringing it to life. We have yet another hidden world to keep track of with an Innkeeper for aliens needing a neutral ground to land on for a while. A very entertaining story with it's usual Andrews humor, a touch of romance, along with life threatening creatures that give our heroine a run for her money. It's left open enough for a sequel to sneak in, and I'm certainly hoping that will happen.

"Another Winning Series from Ilona Andrews"

This is an excellent beginning to a new series. I love the concept of an extraterrestrial/supernatural innkeeper and this first book tells me the Gordons have many entertaining adventures in store for us. I had my husband listen to the antics of Beast, the über Shih Tzu, and we both laughed out loud. To me, Renee Raudman has the perfect voices for Ilona Andrews' characters and she does not disappoint here. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

"Interesting series start, narration annoyed me."

The narration volume going so quiet practically whispers I couldnt hear it and that means I probably missed alot of important info. oh well, not about to go back and listen again anytome since I am still recovering from the anooyance with how she said "wuff" or "woof" instead of wolf. seriously, by the end I cringed and groans aloud every time I heard it. The story was interesting a good start to a new series didn't grab me as much as the Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series.

"Held me Spellbound / Unique Paranormal"

I have read & listened to so many paranormal's over the years that I can practically tell you the next thing that will happen. This one is SO DIFFERENT!!! I won't tell you a description of the book but tell you my impressions. First, the one thing I wish I had done differently is to listen to it as soon as I got the book. However, to my recent dismay, I waited 1 year before plucking it out of my library to listen to it. I was SO WRONG to wait. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in years.

Even though it is a paranormal book, it is much more. The vampires & werewolves are very different than any you've read about. The Innkeeper is also a character that I have never come across. I was really spellbound so much so that when my husband wanted to talk to me I put him off because I "needed" to hear what was happening next. The earbuds wouldn't come off for anything. Those 8+ hours were mine & mine alone to enjoy this book. I said 8+ hours because of my rewind button.

What was unique? The plot & the narrator's voice and inflection were perfect. I applaud the narrator for making this book even more enjoyable than reading it could have been. She breathed life into an already excellent story. Between the words written & her presentation of them I felt I was there. A trip to Costco was the adventure of a lifetime & my mind's eye could see all the events that happened.

I was on the edge of my seat at times, laughed often & always intrigued. The rewind button was hit over & over because I just had to hear a certain part again...just had to! When the Innkeeper mentioned she was reading a book about Angels, I laughed out loud. Was she referring to Nalini Singh's books or one of Ilona's? I knew it had to be one of the two.

I was intrigued with this book's history of vampires. Did you know that vampires are actually aliens? The description for them and their history was fascinating as was the werewolf's history. It was so detailed that I felt I was listening to one of the best mythology stories written. Yet, it wasn't based on mythology but on the author's imagination. The author(s) were able to take something far fetched & unbelievable and make you believe. I was pulled into the story and wanted to stay there. That takes talent.

I know I've used the word different many times in this review but I just don't know what else to say. Unique? Distinctive? Rare? Fascinating? Enthralling? All would be descriptive but not enough. Enjoyable beyond compare (for me) & I didn't want it to end. I understand that bits and pieces of book 2 are online now, however, I think I will wait for the audiobook so that I can experience this pleasure again from the perspective of Ilona Andrews & the narrator, Renee Raudman. I'm on pins and needles waiting to find out what happens to Dina, Sean, Arland, Beast (the Shih Tzu) & the other Galactic guests that Dina has at the Inn.

In hindsight, their is a positive about pulling this book from my library 1 year after purchase. It won't be that long before I can continue on the Innkeeper's saga or at least that's what I'm hoping.

This book is one that like Diana Gabaldon's books, I will listen to many times. There are few that fall into that category for me.

    "A Pure Delight!"

What a new concept, an Inn for paranormals to stay, during their travels. A sentient Inn which is also considered neutral ground and a sanctuary. So any intergalactic or non intergalactic guest can stay here. The story opens with the death of a 3rd dog in the neighborhood. The deaths are vicious, with the animals being eviscerated. Dina is our heroine and Sean is our reluctant Hero, who is also a former Navy seal and a shifter, and is very ignorant of his world, and Arland a vampire who has the makings of being another love interest for Dina.
The world building is unique, presently the inn only has one guest, and she is quite scary. There is also a back story regarding the Inns and Dina's parents, that I am hoping will be further explored in the next book.
My favorite character though was Dina's dog, a lil shi tzu name Beast! LOL This was a fun, engaging book and with some LOL moments.
