Summary

Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch - and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Rupert did find a fiery dragon - and a beautiful princess to rescue. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle, and with the evil of Darkwood spreading, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get.

Still a very good book!

I loved this book when I read it when I was 14, so was happy to see it as an audiobook. Pleased to say, I still love it. Definitely worth a listen!

Wonderful book, woeful narrator

This is a witty, action packed book which introduces us to a new fantasy world which the author comes back to in later books.

It's a shame therefore that Green's wonderful creation has been all but destroyed by John Keating's woeful narration.

Keating's inflection and character accent choices make this painful to endure, if not completely unlistenable. I've had to take a break from this less than a third of the way in, choosing another book in my library instead. Now I don't know if I can force myself to go back to this atrocity.

What annoys me even more is that I bought three extra credits in order to get this and the next two books in the series - both of which are also read by Keating. I feel like I've wasted my money.

I'd suggest, if you like Green's work, listening to the full cast versions by GraphicAudio rather than these abominations.

Stilted delivery spoils fantasy.

This is a fairly well designed, tongue in cheek story of the fantasy kingdom younger son genre but I felt it was spoiled by the narrator’s breathy emphasis of nearly every phrase. Punctuation is written in for a reason and extra pauses in a long sentence change the meaning completely as well as losing the ability to properly accentuate passages of real excitement. I will not be listening to the series for this reason.

oddly paced

I didn't like the narrator at all.
the book was overly long in places while skipping detail elsewhere.
