The most important rule for an Apprentice Consul is simple: Don't get involved with daemons. Well, Piper is planning to break that rule - big time. After a near-deadly scandal with the Sahar Stone, she has the chance to return to the only life she's ever wanted. All she has to do to keep her Apprenticeship is forget about Ash and Lyre. Ash might be enigmatic and notoriously lethal, and Lyre might be as sinfully irresistible as he is irritating, but they're not bad for a couple of daemons. There's just one problem: Ash is missing.
Really, she shouldn't risk her future for him. He lied. He betrayed her. But he also saved her life, damn it. Wherever he is, he's in trouble, and if she doesn't save his sorry butt, who will? But with every dangerous secret she unravels, each one darker than the last, she slips deeper into Ash's world - a world with no escape for either of them.

"good sequel...but...narrator awful"
Look, I purchased the first book and really enjoyed (well, actually, I liked it - ended up reading it on Kindle). The narrator Jorjeana Marie is actually quiet good on some books that she's narrated. However, ALL recent narrations from her are horrid - she has an extremely nasal delivery; and I don't mean "nasal" as in "accent" or "dialect" - I am from NYC and a lot of people think that a "New York" accent/dialect sounds nasal. That's NOT what I mean, I mean that this woman needs to seriously either blow her nose or get herself sorted out medically. She sounds like she has a horrid cold/flu/plague, etc. It's absolutely unbearable to listen to and should not be allowed to record audiobooks. It's not like the audiobooks are free for god's sake... This review is NOT for content of book or the author (I ended up purchasing a Kindle version so that I actually could enjoy the book). I just felt that it was appropriate to review the "narrator" since this is an audiobook site. So, please do, buy the book - it's quite good, but not in the audio format.
"One of the best series I have read"
Non stop action. It keeps you in the edge of your seat. Never a dull moment in this series.
Ash has disappeared and Piper goes looking for him. She knows she is not supposed to get involved with daemons but she can't help it. He has saved her life more than once.
Love this series!!!
"Narrator blew her nose! Whew!"
The last book was a very annoying and distracting performance by the narrator, as everyone commented, including myself. This book read was MUCH less bothersome, but she still has that annoying habit in dropping the "L" sound in the middle of words. Ex: shoulder is pronounced "sho-der," told is "toad", etc. She has a great voice, great acting and lots of potential, but PLEASE! can someone please teach her how to correctly pronounce these words? (It's amazing how many times the word "shoulder" is in this book!)
"Good Story and More Depressing, but Necessary"
I didn't enjoy this book near as much because of the constant depressing parts. With that being said, all of the trials that Ash and Piper had to go through in this book is probably setting up the greater, overall plot. Its like Episode V of Star Wars where the middle movie is darker and not as much fun as the first but is necessary for Episode VI to make sense.
When Piper was taken captive.
When Piper rescued the girl from prison.
I really wanted to hurry up and get to a less oppressive parts.
"Not as good as book 1"
Felt long and uneventful in areas. Little to no character growth. Villain flat, doesn't spark emotions.
i absolutely love this audiobook and I can't wait to see what happens next! I'm in love :)
I'm leaving this review on all of the books from this series, but no real spoilers here.
I can say that I'm terribly sad that I'm almost done with the 5th book in this series (even if only 3 are on audible), I am worried that I won't be able to find another series that I love quite like this one, not for awhile. But in another way I'm a little bit glad that I am almost done because I can get back to my life afterward!
I read a ton of books. I don't always leave reviews, but I had to leave one for this series because it kept me going and going and going. I never wanted to put it down. I had to force myself to do so. And when I found that the last two books were not on audible I almost cried, not kidding. The narrator, while not my favorite at first, ended up fantastic.
The plot was awesome. Slight spoiler here: the love story is terrific. There wasn't much of the icky-sweet, romantic-puke, "our love is the strongest love that ever existed" crap that I see in other series that always makes me go "Really? C'mon now." This one was so much more realistic.
I like that the characters are strong but faulted. I love how the friendship between the 3 grows so strong. I wish Piper would say "Thank you" once in awhile, but I'll get over it. I like how the twists happen, when you think one thing might happen and then, bam, another thing happens.
This series had me gripped from *literally* (I'm using that with it's intended meaning), the first chapter of the first book. That is my favorite type of book, the kind that just grip you and won't let you go. I haven't had that happen to me for a long time and it was such a pleasant surprise, even if it did keep my up until 3 in the morning a few times. These are going on my faves shelf because...well...they are.
Dear Annette Marie, more please? Pretty please?
"Love this series"
This is one of my favorite series. I love all of the characters, and there is constantly something happening to keep your interest. It would be nice if there was a little more time in between the crises to enjoy some happiness, but it keeps things moving and wanting more.
"Do yourself a favor and read this series"
All I can say is that you should do yourself a favor and read these books. Wow.
This being the second novel in this series, I hoped it would be even better than the first and I was not disappointed! The pace was steady and the action gritty with exciting twists and turns. I loved this addition to the series.
