Summary
Springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white.
While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king. War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular - a shade too popular for her employer's taste.
Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

Abercrombie is Lord of fantasy.
If you could sum up Best Served Cold in three words, what would they be?
Dark, engaging, masterful
What other book might you compare Best Served Cold to, and why?
Hard to compare - to write this dark and unrelenting yet still keep you hooked on the fate of the characters. Maybe Anna Karenina? Although, of course, completely different, there's a mood...
Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Steven Pacey is wonderful. I have listened to him narrate all the other Joe Abercrombie books and he's as good here, if not better. His voices add so much depth and dimension to the characters, and he never seems to put a foot wrong.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Well, its too long for one sitting. And since I've read all the other Abercrombie books so far I'm trying to string this one out. I've got about an hour left!
Any additional comments?
Joe Abercrombie and Steven Pacey are a match that have given me hours and hours of great pleasure. And I will be listening to all the books again. I am blessed with a terrible memory, so re-listening can still spring the odd surprise!

Fantastic Fantasy
Excellent pace and plot again by Abercrombie to finish off this trilogy. Matched by the seemingly peerless narration of Pacey. Pretty epic to boot.

Typische Fortsetzung
natütlich nicht ganz so fesselnd wie the blade itself - aber trotzdem durchaus zu empfehlen!

Phenomenal
Incredible from start to finish. The character building and development is spectacular. The narration brilliant. Despairingly dark yet fantastically funny. 10/10.
*Reading the first law trilogy beforehand will provide great moments as you read/listen through this.

Fantastic
Great performance and great story. This series gets better and better. A mostly new set of characters but again all well drawn and rounded. Unexpected twists and an over arching storyline growing ever more ominous. Straight on to the next one for me and I hope its the same narrator.

Only dips slightly for me
Pacey's narration great as always. I loved the first 75%, when the bigger battles are happening about 4/5 in my attention wavered somewhat as I either couldn't keep track of who was fighting for who in the battles (or I didn't care). But then it came back and ended well.

Great follow up to the first law trilogy
Enjoyed it a lot. Great narration. A few of the first law supporting characters, so helps to have context, but you could easily pick this up first.
