Summary

Bitter and merciless war is coming to the frozen north. It's bloody and dangerous, and the Union army, split by politics and hamstrung by incompetence, is unprepared for the slaughter that's coming. Lacking experience, training, and in some cases even weapons, the army is scarcely equipped to repel Bethod's scouts, let alone his elite forces.

In the heat-ravaged south, the Gurkish are massing to assault the city of Dagoska, defended by Inquisitor Glokta. The city is braced for the inevitable defeat and massacre to come... but a plot is festering to hand the city to its besiegers without a fight, and the previous Inquisitor of Dagoska vanished without trace. Threatened from within and without the city, Glokta needs answers, and he needs them soon.

And to the east, a small band of malefactors travel to the edge of the world to reclaim a device from history - a Seed, hidden for generations - with tremendous destructive potential. A device which could put a end to war, to the army of Eaters in the South, to the invasion of Shanka from the North - but only if it can be found, and only if its power can be controlled.

colourful characters and brutal battles

One of my fave narrators brings to life a sequal that improves on the previous book - which I also enjoyed.

The adventures continue

Would you consider the audio edition of Before They Are Hanged to be better than the print version?

The audio version provides a different experience. Listening allows you sit back and visualise the descriptive action with more preciseness. The characterisation of narrator Steven Pacey is excellent and brings a realness to the protagonists.

What other book might you compare Before They Are Hanged to, and why?

It's difficult because there is a uniqueness to Abercombe's writing. Think Game of Thrones with moments of real belly laughter or an irreverent Robert Jordan and you will come somewhere close.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Haven't listened to Steven before, other than Abercombe's books, and I would be interested in hearing how he approaches a different style of narrative.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, out loud at many points and then just as suddenly feel touched and saddened by descriptions of pure brutality.

Any additional comments?

A fantastic book to read, a brilliant book to listen to.

The quality of the writing shines through

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they were not put off by violence or swearing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Before They Are Hanged?

I don't want to introduce any spoilers, but there is little you can predict in this story, the author is very inventive.

What does Steven Pacey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Steven Pacey does a brilliant job maintaining all the different accents for the multitude of characters. Even the women are distinctive from each other by his rendition.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are some very funny one-liners, but I did not think it's the type of book to make you cry.

Any additional comments?

The quality of the writing and the depth of the characterisation makes this series wonderful.

The second book is MUCH better than the first.

I enjoyed the first book, it was a nice change from Brandon Sanderson. It had a brutal edge to it, the fight scenes are good, but I really hesitated before getting the second book.

Don't hesitate.. Where the first book introduced the characters, the second makes them your close friend. The highs are higher, the lows are lower.

My personal favourite is the way that Logans band of friends have become more and more 3d. The laddish banter is hilarious, and enhanced massively by excellent narration.

This is a great second book. Can't wait for third.

Great narration

What made the experience of listening to Before They Are Hanged the most enjoyable?

I generally listen to this in awe of Steven Pacey's performance. The ability to vocalise so many different characters without hamming up the accents is really great. Glotka is especially skillful; a lisp when speaking out loud but not on internal thoughts.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Before They Are Hanged?

I love the line "He wasn't one to wallow in self-pity" after a whole chapter of wallowing in self-pity. Great little moments of humour throughout.

Have you listened to any of Steven Pacey’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Haven't but will!

it's very rare that I can doze off to an audiobook

it's very rare that I can doze off to an audiobook, but I had to rewind this on a couple of 15 minutes sleep timer sessions. I still enjoyed the story, it is just a little slow paced.
