Summary

Bitter and merciless war is coming to the frozen north. It's bloody and dangerous, and the Union army, split by politics and hamstrung by incompetence, is unprepared for the slaughter that's coming. Lacking experience, training, and in some cases even weapons, the army is scarcely equipped to repel Bethod's scouts, let alone his elite forces.

In the heat-ravaged south, the Gurkish are massing to assault the city of Dagoska, defended by Inquisitor Glokta. The city is braced for the inevitable defeat and massacre to come... but a plot is festering to hand the city to its besiegers without a fight, and the previous Inquisitor of Dagoska vanished without trace. Threatened from within and without the city, Glokta needs answers, and he needs them soon.

And to the east, a small band of malefactors travel to the edge of the world to reclaim a device from history - a Seed, hidden for generations - with tremendous destructive potential. A device which could put a end to war, to the army of Eaters in the South, to the invasion of Shanka from the North - but only if it can be found, and only if its power can be controlled.

Excellent!

Any additional comments?

Brilliant story and narration! Listen and be transported to another world where you laugh at the inquisition and urge on unseemly hero's!

Superb

It feels like there’s a cast of dozens with a fantastic, well, articulated narration, wonderfully enhancing the fast paced, gripping and occasionally amusing plot. Thoroughly recommend.

Fantastic

Writing and narration is fantastic, characters are consistent and great. Probably the best character and narrator combo I’ve experienced.

Steven Pacey is king...

Dense, richly textured writing with a subtle undercurrent of character development. Though there are no real surprises within the text (and I for one am not looking to be surprised) the characters are slowly and deftly drawn and then coloured in with rich vivid strokes. Much of this is due to Steven Pacey's faultless narration. I can only admire the work put in by both Abercombie and Pacey. Truly a match made in heaven. And I am not a fan of the fantasy genre ! Am spending money I can ill afford on the next instalment...jeez louise

It's fine

I've noticed some patterns, eg. multiple characters sucking their teeth, and licking their gums, a lot more then it's healthy, and the detailed description of sex scenes, makes me roll my eyes, because the details have no relevance for the plot, and it's way overdone in general (every second movie has one or more as well as a lot of novels). Otherwise both the story and the performance is just as professional as the first one.

Enough good characters to rise above the usual

There are some great characters, major and minor, in this series and even some women! (It makes a pleasant change in this genre where usually everyone is a Princess or a sex worker).

The narration is strong but I was particularly amused by Stephen Pacey’s characterisation of a minor functionary as Rigsby from Rising Damp (a reference for the kids).

Great Tale, fantastically narrated

I don't normally write reviews but I inked this audiobook so much, I thought I'd stop being Lazy and give credit where credit is due.

I'd read the books some years ago, so was familiar with the story and knew I'd enjoy it. No doubts there.

What made this 'review worthy' was the narration by Steven Pacey; the blend between Abercrombie's content and Pacey's delivery make this worth purchasing, even if you already own the text. :-)

I've bought hundreds of audio titles and the delivery here is excellent and superior to most. That said I would recommend listening to the sample before taking my word for it, your preferences may be different.

After all, 'you have to be realistic'.

Brilliant Narration!!

I had already read these books but being new to audiobooks I decided to listen to something I'd already read incase I didn't like it. That way it wouldn't put me off any new books I'd bought. I needed something for work to pass the time so I gave it a shot.

I should not have worried. Steven Pacey is a narrator of the highest quality. He brought the characters alive for me all over again. Gave them individual instantly recognisable voices. He has a great range of accents and voices I have to say.

My only fear now is that I will struggle to find another narrator of the same quality!!! Excellent work!
