Summary

The much-anticipated final conclusion to the Fitz and the Fool trilogy.

Prince FitzChivalry Farseer's daughter, Bee, was violently abducted from Withywoods by Servants of the Four in their search for the Unexpected Son, foretold to wield great power. With Fitz in pursuit, the Servants fled through a Skill-pillar, leaving no trace. It seems certain that they and their young hostage have perished in the Skill-river.

Clerres, where White Prophets were trained by the Servants to set the world on a better path, has been corrupted by greed. Fitz is determined to reach the city and take vengeance on the Four, not only for the loss of Bee but also for their torture of the Fool. Accompanied by FitzVigilant, son of the assassin Chade; Chade's protégé, Spark; and the stableboy Perseverance, Bee's only friend, their journey will take them from the Elderling city of Kelsingra, down the perilous Rain Wild River and on to the Pirate Isles. Their mission for revenge will become a voyage of discovery as well as of reunions, transformations and heartrending shocks.

Startling answers to old mysteries are revealed. What became of the liveships Paragon and Vivacia and their crews? What is the origin of the Others and their eerie beach? How are liveships and dragons connected?

But Fitz and his followers are not the only ones with a deadly grudge against the Four. An ancient wrong will bring them unlikely and dangerous allies in their quest. And if the corrupt society of Clerres is to be brought down, Fitz and the Fool will have to make a series of profound and fateful sacrifices.

Critic reviews

"Fantasy as it ought to be written...Hobb's books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons." (George R. R. Martin)
"Hobb is superb, spinning wonderful characters and plots from pure imagination." (Conn Iggulden)
"Robin Hobb's secret is not just the detail with which she depicts the Six Duchies world she has explored over 20 years...the feelings of anguish, ambiguity, fear and failure are as familiar as those in a novel by Jonathan Franzen." ( Independent)
"A little slice of heaven." ( Guardian)
"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers...what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." ( The Times)

Not having the same male narrator is SO jarring.

How could the performance have been better?

I have waited so long for this, desperate to know what happens to Bee and Fitz.
but having a different male narrator is so distracting. I can't get passed it at all.
It has really ruined the continuation of the trilogy to the point where I can't listen to it any longer.
I am going to have to get the book on kindle and read it for myself.
I don't think the narrator is "bad", he just isn't the right person. some of the voices he does for the characters are so different from the previous narrators voices that it makes the characters seem like entirely different people.
I am really dissapointed that audible didn't get the same male narrator for this reading.

Any additional comments?

I love Robin Hobb, I am sure that this story will have a thrilling and exciting conclusion, with much drama in between, but for now I have to stop listening because the new male narrator is ruining it for me.

Narration is disjointed, changing characters

Would you be willing to try another one of Avita Jay and David Thorpe ’s performances?

Avita Jay does Bee very well.
I feel that David Thorpe should have listened to the other narrators - his changing Live Ships to Liv Ships is irritating. He has also made loved characters sound petty, Althea in particular.

Live ships not liv!

Would you listen to Assassin's Fate again? Why?

I've really loved these books but in this one the narrator pronouncing Live as liv (rhymes with give) is driving me crazy

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Avita Jay and David Thorpe ?

Someone who has some knowledge of the story and not spoil the characters. It's a shame the same person (man) couldn't/wouldn't narrate this last one

Change of narrator !!!

David Thorpe is an excellent narrator just not for this book. The main characters are completely changed by his narration and the mispronounced live ships is a constant irritation. Robin Hobb 's final book in the series is great as usual and well deserves 5 stars.

Beware, they've changed the male narrator !

Would you consider the audio edition of Assassin's Fate to be better than the print version?

No

What didn’t you like about Avita Jay and David Thorpe ’s performance?

I find it very hard to adjust to David Thorpe, I'm going have to revert to reading rather than listening to this eagerly awaited story. He reads the Peter James Roy Grace books and hasn't changed his voice at all for this reading

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It could be bigger the Game of Thrones! Not sure what a tag line is

Brilliant end for the Fitz and the Fool

Without any spoilers I really enjoyed this last part of the Fitz and Fool stories.
Bringing the Live ships into story was great to have them again (apart from the narrator always said "live" as in I live here but in previous audio books it was pronounced like in the word "alive".
Very sad at the end and think something may have got in my eye as there were tears there.
Glad I have read all the books in the series but as always with long sagas very sad it is finished

I struggled with Fitz's new narrator

I really enjoyed book 1 of this series so have seen it to the end. The new narrator seemed to change the personalities which I really struggled with specially Fitz's and Fools, but I had already lost interest in Fitz's part of the story, so I skimmed his chapters and just listened to Bee's which I enjoyed and because it is 40+ hours I still had plenty of story and didn't feel I missed out. Towards the end the characters all started developing because all they had been through so I found I could enjoy Fitz's story again with the new narrator.

I am really glad I listened to this book and I feel it completed the story well.

Glad its over

Plot line based on ridiculous coincidences and events. Far too long and full of repetition. Struggled to finish by jumping sections. Its as if the author got bored and looked for weirdest way to finish off the main characters.
Naration the worst of the whole series. Please explain to the reader that liveship means its alive so please pronounce it like alive, as did all previous readers.

new narrator..

someone else commented on this and before buying I thought pah! people can be so dramatic. but I was wrong. there is nothing at fault with the narrator except he is different and the voices are "wrong" but perhaps more annoyingly, so too is some of the pronunciation... if you've not heard the other books as audio there are no problems. fantastic book, well narrated just not quite right...

The narrator cannot read!

What did you like most about Assassin's Fate?

Still listening to it. Love it so far.

What did you like best about this story?

The male narrator's pronunciation is so irritating it is spoiling it.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Avita Jay and David Thorpe ?

Avita was wonderful, I would not change her but you should have kept any of the other male narrators, not Thorpe.
