WINNER OF THE HUGO, LOCUS AND BRAM STOKER AWARDS
After three years in prison, Shadow Moon is free to go home. But hours before his release, his beloved wife is killed in a freak accident. Numbly, he boards a plane where he meets an enigmatic stranger who seems to know Shadow and claims to be an ancient god - and king of America.
Together they embark on a profoundly strange road trip across the USA, encountering a kaleidoscopic cast of characters along the way. But all around them a storm of unnatural proportions is gathering.
War is coming, an epic struggle for the very soul of America. And Shadow is standing squarely in its path.

Really enjoyed
It took a while to get into and there are some slow bits, but the cast is so good and the story so intriguing, that I got well and truly sucked into it. I particularly enjoyed the sections read by Neil himself. Terrific.

Amazing performance, decent story
I loved how there were numerous voice actors portraying the characters with not just unique personalities but accents as well. really brought out the best of this narrative. However, I wasn't completely satisfied with the conclusion of the story. My favorite read of the summer.

I was a Neil Gaiman virgin, this beautifully read, told adventure into the outreaches of imagination was a perfect escapism.

Amazing
Having the unabridged version gives a real feel for the book, as the writer wanted it wrtitten. 19 hours is very long, but every minute was interesting and you arekept wondering what happens next. Would definitely recommend!

Don't know if it can be topped.
Why choose this as your first book on Audible?
This was my first choice for an audio book because mainly I loved Sandman as well as Gaiman's other works and was interested in what made this so special as to be made in to a TV show before it comes out. Well I can see know why this book is so highly regarded as I've finished what I believe will be the best audio book I will ever listen to. The narrator does a great job of descriptions between the excellent dialogue delivered by a cast of great voice actors. Each character expressed so much just in their tone of voice and delivery of every word that the TV show will be challenged to meet. The style of story (based on religion in a way that bends everything about its source material) that things such as Sandman, Lucifer, Preacher, Constantine and many other all pull off so well is personally one of my favourite genres in any form of story telling and I believe that American Gods is the perfect example of why. I look very forward to seeing this fantastic story told on the small screen next year and trust that the show runners will do a good job based on what I have seen and heard so far.
