Editor reviews

George R. R. Martin’s sprawling, highly acclaimed epic fantasy series, on which the hit TV show Game of Thrones is based, continues. Veteran actor Roy Doctrice reads this classic audiobook, in which blood feuds and rebellions are laying waste the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. As winter draws nearer, 20,000 wildings are congregating in far-north Frostfangs to attack Robb Stark’s Kingdom of the North, under fire from the south by the treacherous Lannisters. Thrilling, moving and deeply complex, A Storm of Swords (Part One) - Steel and Snow, book 3 of A Song of Ice and Fire, is available from Audible.

Summary

The complete, unabridged audiobook of A Storm of Swords.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Storm of Swords is the third volume in the series.

The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud, and winter approaches like an angry beast. Beyond the Northern borders, wildlings leave their villages to gather in the ice and stone wasteland of the Frostfangs. From there, the renegade Brother Mance Rayder will lead them South towards the Wall.

The men of the Night’s Watch are ready for the coming of a great cold and the walking corpses that travel with it. But now they face a horde of wildlings 20000 strong - hungry savage people steeped in the dark magic of the haunted wilderness – poised to invade the Kingdom of the North where Robb Stark wears his new-forged crown.

But Robb’s defences are ranged against attack from the South, the land of House Stark’s enemies the Lannisters. His sisters are trapped there, dead or likely yet to die, at the whim of the Lannister boy-king Joffrey or his depraved mother Cersei, regent of the Iron Throne. Cersei’s ambition is unfettered while the dwarf Tyrion Lannister fights for his life, a victim of treachery.

And on the other side of the ocean, the last of the Targaryens rears the dragons she hatched from her husband’s funeral pyre. Daenerys Stormborn will return to the land of her birth to avenge the murder of her father, the last Dragon King on the Iron Throne.

Critic reviews

"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." ( SFX)
"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)

Amazing performance by Roy Doltrice

A lot of other reviews talk about the inconsistent narration, with accents etc... I personally think he's done a great job (so far) and will listen to all of them. I'm sad that he's sinced passed and unable to do them all, as his narration is how I now imagine the world now (not the show anymore). I totally buy into his performance of Brienne of Tarth despite the mispronunciation of her name. Storylines that stand out for me -

DAVOS (makes sense that he sounds like a moby dick character to me)
BRAN (MEERA and JOJEN I didn't care much for in the series, love them here)
JAIME (chemistry is great with Brienne, through the narration you can tell how annoying he Jaime finds her initially 'Kingslayer')

Also, I'd go as far as saying that the change in Tywin's accent is for the better. I would have got used to the previous one I'm sure, but can see why he changed it. I think we have to give the artistic licence to the narrator in certain places really and this was clearly a decision, not an accident.

If the inconsistencies pull you out of the world too much then I understand that. To me audio books are like having your very own storyteller and should have a bit of heart and soul in them (even mistakes!). I joke with my girlfriend about "Bry-EEN" of Tarth" or "PeeTIRE Balish". I mean give the guy a break, he must have been in that recording booth for ages and this is a fine piece of work he left behind for us to enjoy.

The worst narrator in the history or the Earth

The story is fascinating. The characters beautiful and harsh and smart and wise and full of all human errors.
The narration is horrible, disturbing and laughable.
Idiotic noises that pass for voices. Everyone but the main characters sound stupid drunkards with whole carrots stuffed down their throats... He pronounces the names incorrectly and makes me want to go deaf.
The worst experience of my life.

Great book.

Great book. Shame about the narrator's terrible accents and attempts at character voices. Just read, please, just read.

Better than the show

If you liked the show then you will love these books, more details and explanations than the show could ever hope to have! Get these and remind yourself how the seven kingdoms got to where they are now!

Again debatable pronunciation

This time, Brienne's and Melisandre's name pronunciations are the ones that rub me the wrong way. The story though is as brilliant as ever.

Enjoyable from start to… well… half way.

What made the experience of listening to A Storm of Swords (Part One) - Steel and Snow the most enjoyable?

Don't know if it's just that I'm getting used to him, but I'm really enjoying listening to the narrator. First book I wasn't sure - felt the accents just too strong and a bit off-putting. But seems a bit softer now, and I can't imagine listening to anyone else reading this. Really enjoy listening to him.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I adore Aria - such a cool babe - and great character arc. But I think Brienne is the most intriguing here - she faces such prejudice and disrespect, but handles it with integrity and remains true to herself. I hope she doesn't become part of GRRM's cull!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Pretty much anything with Jamie and Brienne in it - interesting how these two characters keep steeping either side of the hate / disgust and respect / attraction line.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Listening to Caitlin struggle with her inner turmoil of trying to protect (save) her daughters while staying loyal and obedient to her newly-crowned and maturing son plays out beautifully and painfully.

Any additional comments?

It's very frustrating that this book is split into two, tho I guess audible have to make their money from these very long books. Having to sit and wait until my next credit is due to hear the rest of the book….

Amazing

So gripping as the drama progresses! The characters really develop and George RR Martin knows how to capture you're attention. Also, Roy Dotrice has a wonderful clear voice!
