Summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

Excellent

Loved it. I've watched every episode of all eight series. Listening to this, series one, there was so much more in depth information in the narration which was obviously not in the filmed version.

Roy Dotrice was very good in the way he changed his voice/accents to depict the various characters.

Looking forward to book two.

Simply, WOW

Exceptional book, expertly and superbly read by Roy Dotrice. His soothing voice takes on the characters and brings them to life. I have downloaded the second book already and cannot wait to start.

Good listen, just not a fan of the narrating

I know it will be hard with so many characters, it's just everyone has the same voice.

My Game of Thrones Fix!

I Decided to start listening to these books in the hope that when GRRM finishes the Saga the ending is more satisfying, So I began the first book with, having watched the series two times over, the expectation that I would be bored as I knew the outline of story, however I was so wrong!

The book gives you a much greater look into the thought process' of the characters, and you get much more information about the world in which the book is set, so as a massive GOT nerd, it has really scratched the itch i was after, i will be listenign to the rest of the series and wait with massive excitement for The Winds of Winter and a Dream of Spring.

Great story, poor performance.

There were lots of times where the reader coughed or said the wrong words or mispronounced something. How does anyone pronounce Joffrey as Jeffrey? And at one point he mentions seeing the "Seven Seas" rather than the Seven Kingdoms. Kinda don't know how the editor missed all that.
