Summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

brilliant book, well worth a listen

loved this book, you get a lot more detail that the show . easy to understand what each person is thinking and why some actions happen. my only issue is the narrator put the same old English voice on for most of the Knights and young lords

Narration ruined my listening pleasure

If you could sum up A Game of Thrones (Part One) in three words, what would they be?

Gripping, gruesome and great!

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Game of Thrones (Part One)?

Now that would be a plot spoiler....

What didn’t you like about Roy Dotrice’s performance?

Dreadful - made Tryrion sound like an even camper Alan Bennett and most of the time Dotrice just sounded like he was completely bored.

I was only kind of into Game of Thrones

I've watched the entire series and I enjoyed it mostly, but I never truly understood the story. especially the beginning was vague in memory, as I didn't have a clue as to who was whom. But having listened to the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire, I'm finally truly sold on this franchise. The narration is good and consistent and the story is of course incredible.

Unmatched witing, Inconsistent Narration

Unbelievable writing and beautiful characters but annoying narration.

Narrator mispronounces names, (Pe-tire baelish? - Jeffrey?) regularly changes accents, especially among dothraki towards the end of the book, and makes young characters sound really old

Utterly immersive, a complete world to get lost in. Can't wait to start the next one.

Great

Excellent story (as I already knew, this was a re-read) however the narrator pronounced Targaryen wrong for 95% of the story and some of the accents he chose were questionable
