Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

Solid first 3/4's...dissapointing finale.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Hmmm, not really. [Spoiler free] - Ive said that the finale is dissapointing, but this has little to do with the plot/story - which was fine, if a little derivative. The build up of quiet dread, and the slow unfolding of the mystery was a lot of fun. No, it was the character's response to the events towards the end that didn't sit well. Up to the final quarter of the book, Nate and chums responded plausibly to what was going on. However, their friendly banter, and muted reactions (to what was, a roller-coaster of terror and madness), seemed more in keeping with getting lost in the woods, and not being sure if you're going to make it home that night, rather than, what was, a prolonged waking nightmare.

Putting people in bizarre, and horrifying situations, and making their responses believable, is something that writers like, Stephen King or Richard Matheson, seem to make look easy. And its essential in stories like this. Peter Clines' difficulty just highlights how hard it is to actually achieve, and the difference between writing a book thats good, and writing one thats just alright.

The narration, although a little flat and stacatto at times (during the 3rd person narration, rather than when people were 'talking'), was quality. The characters were distinct and well portrayed.

Finally - A fantastic narrator!

I've had some hit and miss luck with narrators and was about to give up on audiobooks altogether...... Luckily I tried this book! This guy was spot on!

Every character had a unique accent and didn't distract from the story... even the female voices! I hope all future audible books have top narrators like this one.

Story - great story & not too long winded - snappy story telling. Fans of 'Fringe' would like this.

A beautifully crafted horror in the Lovecraft mold

A stunningly well crafted horror mystery with strong Lovecraft, Men In Black conspiracy undertones. Peter Clines is a phenomenal writer. Not a scene gone to waste, not a detail missed. Fast, entertaining and with a depth of execution other writers could learn from.
Loved it!

Wow!

I listen to at least 4 audiobooks every fortnight and this book was a genuine pleasure to listen to. An awesome storyline with characters you believe. Well worth the purchase. 5/5

Steampunky history and Scary-fi.

The story is intelligent in most part and humorous. There were however a few points of sexual references that make no sense. if you've been knocked into a sudden fear striking terror inducing panic the last thing you'll be doing us making little innuendos and having "naughty thoughts". (you'll know exactly what I mean when you hear it).
All in all though, a clever storyline, very gripping. and only Ray Porter could carry this book off. in fact he MADE IT! I also Strongly recommend The full Bobiverse series narrated by him. incredible story and just as well done. I enjoyed this book. when my nerves have settled from the last chapters ima listen to the next!

A good interesting tale

Was a good listen well different from a lot of sci fi I normally listen to. I enjoyed it.

Like nothing else

This book is completely mad; it's like nothing I've ever listened to before! Equal parts sci-fi and horror written in a way that completely draws you in. I loved it and couldn't stop listening. Word of advice though; don't listen to it before bed. It actually made me pretty scared in parts.

The narrating is great too - easy to listen to and great variation of voice between characters.

Superb!

First time listening to Peter Clines. The story way great and kept me listening. But as always it wouldn't have sounded the same had it not been for Ray Porter. He is the must have narrator for any audio book.
