Summary

Life is the ultimate game of hide and seek... and the good news is that you're it! With the combination of playful irreverence and penetrating insight that made him a legend in Western philosophy, Alan Watts investigates the surprisingly liberating concept of "the universe as play" found at the heart of Hinduism, Zen, and other wisdom traditions.

Carefully selected by his son and archivist Mark Watts, You're It: On Hiding, Seeking, and Being Found features more than 10 hours of newly restored historic talks from the "spiritual entertainer" who helped define Eastern thought to audiences in the West. Here is a rare chance for listeners to experience the enduring brilliance of one of the greatest spiritual voices of the 20th century.

Thought provoking funny and enlightening

The way in which Watts never really took himself too seriously really comes across in these recordings. So much richer than the text and something I will be listening to again.

In depth look at religions, god, spirituality, ego

I felt this is a more complicated read than ”out of your mind” but nonetheless very interesting, specially the last chapter goes to the root.
* explains the mechanics of zen ”spontaneous”,”thoughtless actions”, what a Koan really is.
* explains that Alan Watts is just a persona he is playing and that his thoughts will never be but a poorer representation of reality
* I feel it clears up some stuff that might help the read of Lao Tzus Tao Te Ching
For example: ”The tao that can be spoken, can be named is not the real Tao”
* we cannot solve the problem of enlightment, god realisation from our mind, our consciousness
* ego doesn’t exist
* we are god, the universe, what can’t be definied, existance itself, ”it”

Strange audiobook

Where does You're It! rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Anything with Alan Watts name on is gong to be enigmatic and motivating. His form of pragmatic spiritualism is great for western listeners as he's mediating between his understanding of eastern philosophy/spiritualism and western culture. This book is not really a book, it's a recording of some his lectures in America. The audio quality is not great - imagine watching lecture video filmed from the middle row. But his content is great and hearing the audience and the way he works with them is as intriguing an experience as reading some high minded literature. It makes you wonder how much his charisma was a cause for his popularity as we're his ideas. Not your regular audiobook and requires some dedicated listening - I tend to dip in and out every few weeks - I enjoy it every time.

Consciousness change

I love listening to Alan and am awed by his oratory skills.
Be prepared for paradox’s, be prepared for longwinded metaphors and stories that chase their own tails, be prepared to be confused, entranced and mystified. These talks are a great way to shift your way of understanding everything about the universe and the sense of self
