If there is a loving God, then why is it that...? You've heard that question, perhaps asked it yourself. No matter how you complete it, at its root lies the issue of pain. Does God order our suffering? Does he decree an abusive childhood, orchestrate a jet crash, steer a tornado through a community? Or did he simply wind up the world's mainspring and now is watching from a distance?
In this Gold Medallion Award-winning book, Philip Yancey reveals a God who is neither capricious nor unconcerned. Using examples from the Bible and from his own experiences, Yancey looks at pain - physical, emotional, and spiritual - and helps us understand why we suffer.
Where Is God When It Hurts? will speak to those for whom life sometimes just doesn't make sense. And it will help equip anyone who wants to reach out to someone in pain but just doesn't know what to say.

This book is a wonderful encouragement to Christians who are in the midst of painful circumstances, wondering where God is and whether He has abandoned them. Phillip Yancey gives a number of perspectives on pain and suffering which cast a helpful light on how suffering can be purposeful and have eternal meaning. He resists trite explanations which end up adding salt to the wound and trivialising or invalidating the pain, but caringly and sensitively draws our attention to God's faithful and sovereign involvement in the midst of their pain. To be thoroughly recommended whether or not you are in pain.
"Why Pain and Suffering are Necessary"
This is a very thorough book on the theology of pain. Godly people have reasons why a good person is suffering, but are not accurate in their views of God.
"An ultimate realization of the need for pain."
An ultimate realization of the need for pain. How God's grace is shown even through pain.
"A must read for those who are grieving..."
Phillip Yancey provides an honest, truthful and heartfelt examination on suffering and a sobering reminder of where God is in all of this dreaded yet inevitable human experience that is suffering.
"He is with you!!"
It was a personal journey
The comfort of His presence
Exactly the title of the book
"Perspective is everything"
The in depth study of those is pain seemed to drag on and on... this was both the best and worst part of this book. The necessity to understand the pain demands spending time with the characters in pain. At times it was challenging to focus.
"Very thought provoking Book. Good Reader...."
Very interesting book. I truly enjoyed the part about the positives of the pain system and why God created it.
Philip Yancey talks about questions that every single person has asked. Where is God when it hurts? That is a very common question for every single person no matter who you are. I have enjoyed this book as Philip Yancey talks about God and pain.
