There is an unseen world of good and evil where nightmares are fought and hope is reborn. Enter The Door Within. Aidan Thomas is miserable. And it's much more than the strange nightmares he's been having. Just when life seemed to be coming together for Aidan, his parents suddenly move the family across the country to take care of his wheelchair-bound grandfather.
When strange events begin to occur, Aidan is drawn into his grandfather's basement where he discovers three ancient scrolls and an invitation to another world. No longer confined to the realm of his own imagination, Aidan embarks on an adventure where he meets knights, warriors, kings and mysterious Glimpses who can travel between worlds. Aidan joins them in the struggle between good and evil. With the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance, Aidan faces Paragory, the eternal enemy. Will Aidan be willing to risk everything and trust the unseen hand of the one true King? The answer comes from The Door Within.

"Good, but keep in mind:"
All right, the first thing to note is that this is aimed at 10-year-olds and up. Not surprising, since the author has been teaching 6th grade English for years. Keeping that in mind, the parallels are great, and the story is compelling once you get into the alternate world. The down-side is that some of the descriptive language is laughable, and the similes are awful. I had a very hard time getting through the beginning of the story, but by the time it ended, I downloaded the second book.
Overall, I'm glad someone is using the Fantasy genre to bring a Christ-representative story to readers who would otherwise be reading about witchcraft and false gods.
"Well Done Fantasy Story!"
Wayne Thomas Batson has done an excellent job telling an interesting traditional fantasy story. Yes, it is aimed at middle school age kids (not unlike Harry Potter or such), but I am a 41 year old doctor and I loved it. I downloaded it because my daughter was reading it, and I the book looked interesting. Plus, it never hurts to find out what your kids are reading!
Yes, it has a Christian influence, but it is not heavy-handed (think Chronicles of Narnia). There are a few slow parts in the first half but by the end it was quite gripping. This one is read by the author himself, who really throws himself into it. All the voices are well done overall, a few of the accents are a little goofy (particularly when he slips into a pseudo-English accent while narrating), but certainly better than I could have done. I definitely think that we need more of this type of author in this genre providing well written stories for our kids (and us!).
As an aside, we also have been listening to it in the car on long road trips, which I highly recommend as a good family way to pass the time without watching TV/DVD for hours on end!
Overall, definitely recommend this audiobook.
"The Grand Adventure has Begun..."
I enjoyed how it was read and it was GREAT to hear how the author interpreted the voices.
It is hard to compare it to other books because the message points to God and his perfect love. It shows that God will never leave us nor forsake us.
It is REALLY hard to pick one. They all had their different personalities and Mr. Batson did a wonderful job in bring them to life.
"The first step taken in faith, is what leads to the epic adventure!"
