I didn't know life could get better! My soul yearned for confirmation that 'less is more.' I'm simply amazed, no 'rocketed to the 5th dimension' with this stuff. To live a life conscious of the moment, purposefully , slowly and serenely is all I've ever wanted and this book teaches me how in the simplest of terms. Like, right here, right now stuff, like 'begin where you are stuff, NOW. No thinking necessary 'just be the person/thing that you seek, right now. Thank you Jon and every other teacher of this way of being, thank you.
Calming, useful, easy
His calming voice really helps you, especially when you get to the meditative exercises as it would have been difficult to read and remember these and then perform the exercises properly - instead, you are talked through it in a clear and reassuring manner that helps you focus on the exercises and perform them properly, meaning that they are much more effective and useful.
There were a couple of points when he talked about stress and living in the moment that really hit me hard as I could recognise myself in the negative cycle he was describing and I realised how much that was affecting my life. Before trying this I was sceptical but afterwards I was able to see what a difference it had made and how much better I felt.
This book changed things for me dramatically - I lead a busy and often stressful life and this helped me learn how to step away from that and not get bogged down in daily stress and over thinking things but take some time to just appreciate the moment and bring some calm and non judgemental thinking to my day.
I am a clinical psychologist working with people experiencing a range of psychological problems, and recommend this to everyone I work with when using mindfulness (which is most people!). It is very easy to listen to, explaining the history and practice of mindfulness in every day life. The first half is a talk about mindfulness, the second half is a series of simple mindfulness exercises. Well worth the money!
I've listened over and over and over to this wonderful audiobook.
Jon's soulful voice soothes and heals while you sit - or lie - and you can do the meditations sitting or lying down.
I'm not saying this is the panacea for all known human woes.
But it offers the chance to see the world through a different lens.
A lens that needs constant cleaning.
I've listened to this every week since I downloaded it a few months ago, and find it extremely helpful in relaxation and keeping me grounded. I love the tone and cadence of it; it less like a reading and more like an impassioned conversation with a friend. He removes the religious and new-age-y connotations from meditation, and explains how awareness fits in with thoughts, senses, mind and body.
"This is really good!"
Yes, for something like meditation, it's more 'real' when you can listen. Also with this book, which I have, you don't get the guided meditations except on c.d.
I don't know why one reviewer said it was awful, it was fine, and he does show inflection and passion for it. He is NOT monotone.
Listen for yourself, it's a great book for beginners, which I am. Lots of good, easy to understand concepts.
"Content great - presentation poor"
The content is distilled John Kabat Zinn and is wonderful, delivery is sadly lacking and the reason I have discontinued with audible. Track 1 & Track 2 ?? Thats it... unfortunately i don't have the time or the "mindfullness" to waste so many moments of my life finding the sections of the piece I want to listen too.
"Reader salivating & swallowing make it disgusting"
No. It's exactly the reading of the book that is so offensive to the ear that the content becomes lost
The story itself, and the book, are fantastic.
Reader salivating & swallowing make it disgusting
I had an extreme repulsion to hearing the reader's body fluid management
Usually I'm a big fan of the author narrating their book because they can convey their excitement about the topic and stress the things they see as most important. With this one however I didn't make it past the 10 minutes mark. The narrator/author makes an overly soft-spoken attempt at ethereal enlightenment that is really just the whispered condescension of someone who doesn't like kids talking to a 5 year old. I felt like I was in a really, really bad and stereotypical yoga class. If Saturday Night Live did a spoof on these types of books this is exactly the narration they would use.
If you have ever read so much as an article on meditation, you are past what this book offers.
I completely agree with Jane of Hopewell, VA in her review. This feels like a parody of a meditation session. If you can listen to "Track 1" without wanting to throttle this guy and tell him to spit it out, you are past what it is "teaching." Otherwise, like me, you might have to go ride your stationary bike to work off the irritation of wanting to throttle the guy and tell him to spit it out.
Also, I do not like the format at all. But, it is my fault that I am so ignorant of my Zen thingy that I don't even know how to effectively set a bookmark to find a meditation session that appeals to me, if I could stand to listen to the contemplation of a raisin first.
You can get better for free on some websites.
"Great book and narration"
Have listened to this several times - love it! The narrator does a great job
This book is not my favorite. I feel like the author didn't do a good job of making his point or getting the audience to understand the subject matter.
The narrator was very flat, monotone, and a bit boring. The book kept losing my attention. I only kept it because I was looking for some hint of understanding. That is actually all I got: "a hint of understanding."
This book is like a bad movie that you've heard a lot of hype about so you go see and you sit through it but you're pretty disappointed.
this audiobook downloaded as a single track. makes it almost unusable. very disappointing. I will not purchase any other content from this site.
