Summary

Ever wondered why the gap between rich and poor nations is so great, or why it's so difficult getting a foot on the property ladder, or how to outwit Starbucks? This audiobook offers the hidden story behind these and other questions, as economist Tim Harford reveals how supermarkets, airlines, and coffee chains, to name just a few, are vacuuming money from our wallets. Written with a light, humorous touch but backed up by the latest economic research, this eye-opening book exposes the forces that shape our day-to-day lives, often without our knowing it.

Critic reviews

"A playful guide to the economics of everyday life, and as such is something of an elder sibling to Steven Levitt's wild child, the hugely successful Freakonomics." ( The Economist)
"This is a book to savour." ( The New York Times)

Great content wonderfully read

Breaks down beginners behavioural economics into easily understood chunks with good examples.
Definitely a perspective of the time written so be sure to listen along with current writings for the best perspective

Better than Feakonomics - more in depth

I have come to the world of Economics like many people via the route of Freakonmics. As much as I enjoyed Freakonomics I felt there was a very small amount of (admittedly excellent) content spread over a longer book.

This book is different. The author sometimes takes a while setting the scene but this all adds to the understanding of the principles he is explaining. I can honestly say that my understanding of the world is greater having listened to this book. The narration is fine, with a pleasant english voice that doesn't grip you but at the same time does not become tiresome.

I would certainly purchase another book by this author

Good into to economics

Good intro and enjoyable, but skins some big issues
The last chapter is fascinating and deserves a book in itself

Classic stuff only aging like a good wine.

What did you like most about The Undercover Economist?

There's an infectious offbeat kind of enthusiasm and optimism throughout the book.

What about Cameron Stewart’s performance did you like?

I was convinced, at times, that he had actually written the book himself because he presented it with such gusto.

Any additional comments?

Although some of the events and themes are showing their age a little (the book is not new in 2015) the actual topics are still relevant, sometimes very currently so. Provides a nice "british" contrast to the Freakonomics style along a similar vein.

Great story! Poor choice of reader..

As usual Tim Harford opens my mind to the amazing secrets of economics hidden everywhere in my daily life and does it with great stories, interesting theories of how to apply economic models and the odd joke! Shame though it is ruined by a reader with a dull voice..

Fascinating introduction to microeconomics ruined by posh narrator

The content is excellent: very interesting and well explained but enjoyment of the audiobook is severely impaired by the posh voice of the narrator, which is so posh it is difficult to understand in places. If only Tim Halford had read his own book!

Great for long journeys in the car!

The subject matter is delivered just right for me - enough engagement is required stave of boredom, but not so much that concentration on the road is undermined. Thoughtfully compiled and explained. Much recommended!!

much better than Freakanomics

This is great fun and for anyone used to hearing the BBC radio 4 series, it's familiar yet with much greater detail -albeit slightly out of date (7 years out of date at least it seems when he's talking about China at the end)..

It's a more expansive and interesting version of FREAKANOMICS. Hartford is a breezy master of writing and simplifying complex concepts into succinct relatable tales.

I highly recommend for anyone interested in Business, economics, history or social sciences.
