Publisher's Summary

An esteemed professor of biology at Wheaton College, John Kricher leads a fascinating discussion of the approximately 10,000 species of birds that share our world. In these engaging lectures, Kricher expands on such topics as bird anatomy, the mechanics of flight, migration, reproduction, and song. The professor's lively presentation demonstrates how understanding the traits, life cycle, and evolution of birds is critical for an understanding of the origins and evolution of life on earth - and why conservation plays a vital role in the environment's delicate balance.

Very similar to an actual ornithology class I took at a university. Told in a conversational way. I definitely recommend!

    "Great Bird Intro"

This is a nice collection of lectures about birds. Not a whole lot of new, startling information, but a nice introduction. The author/lecturer was able to express his passion for birds and for science.

"Excellent overview for the beginning birder"
What made the experience of listening to The Modern Scholar: The Biology of Birds the most enjoyable?

The narrator has an uncanny way of sounding like he actually IS John Kircher, the professor/author who wrote these lectures. His conversational style of reading is comfortable and affable, accessible. I suspect many listeners even mildly interested in the subject will gain loads of information and enthusiasm, thanks to the style of Kircher's writing, and the ease in which the narrator presents it.

What did you like best about this story?

There is a lot of information covered in this series of lectures, and the many examples of bird life and anatomy which were correlated with easy to picture metaphors or relatable examples makes it easy to assemble quite a bit of information. Of course, I could easily have listened to another 4 hours. Since the narrator is easy on the ears, and the writer draws the student in (one gets the feeling he not only loves his subject but loves to share all the remarkable and exciting things about it) I will probably listen to this again.

    Any additional comments?

If John Kircher has any more lectures or books on birds, and they are narrated by "uncredited" ( Tom Stechschulte) I''l be first in line to purchase the audiobook.

    "Fascinating Bird Basics"

I enjoyed this so much. Professor Kricher had a very amiable style, a wonderful voice, and was incredibly knowledgeable. The lecture sounded extemporaneous yet never wavered from the subject. I felt like an expert after listening and have gone back and listened several times, always trying to commit the facts to memory. I am a beginner birder and this definitely cemented my interest and increased my desire to learn more. I hope there is a Part Two in the works!

A useful and workable balance of information and narrative in the audible version. It's definitely overpriced so use one of your free credits.
