If you are either starting an undergraduate degree in physics or electronics or if you just have an inquiring mind and want to know how one of the universes most fundamental forces works up to our current knowledge then this and vol 14 is a 'must have'. All other books on this subject are derived from these, no matter who it is by (as long as it is after 1965) as Feynman re-wrote the theory on how light and electrons really work. His theory won him the Nobel Prize and has been tested and tested ever since. It has never failed to describe all things electromagnetic. Feynman is unique in that he was certainly the most important physicist of the latter 20th century and he can get his subject over to an audience in a dramatic and wistful manner. Just listening to him will add to your knowledge of the universe. Studying with him will allow you to someway understand how everything (with the exception of falling over) works, from a silicon chip to why you laugh at a joke. I have the three written volumes of the 'lectures on physics' and it is great to listen along and read with Feynman's 'wise-acre New York accent' taking me through it. I am a post grad physicist and full time physics lecturer, I would not be doing this is if it weren't for RP Feynman.
