I'm afraid I've got to disagree with the other reviewer. I can see that this won't work if you're trying to only listen to specific sections or to skip ahead to catch up with your reading group if you've fallen behind. But if you intend to listen it through from start to finish - as you do with an audiobook - it's simply excellent. The narration is passionate without sounding over-dramatized and Peterson's translation really lends itself to a narration. I couldn't come to grips with the Message translation as a written book, but listening to it really opens up the Bible for me. If one considers that, for millennia, the Word of God has been primarily passed on verbally with Rabbis, Priests and Pastors relating the stories to their faithful (and illiterate) flock, one wonders whether this could perhaps be a return to something we've lost. This isn't a study Bible, it's a Bible reading tool designed to read through the whole Bible and get the big picture, connecting the dots like never before. If you, like me, have never made it through the whole thing, I suggest you join me and let Peterson and Dolan tell you the old-old stories like you haven't heard them since you were a kid.
Do not buy! The files you are given are huge in time which means you cannot search for the day number that you require without using up lots of valuable time. Also it comes in .aa format which is a total pain. When will these people realise that the customer wants a format that will play on anything? Do yourself a favour just buy the book which is a Godsend. I have wasted my money on this.
I decided yet again to read through my bible in a year, feeling that I lacked a good overall understanding of how the book fits together. I'm so glad that I decided to do this this year. I listen to the Daily Message and I am simultaneously reading through the Living Bible. I have found that when I read it all seems more familiar as I have already heard it. It's great to be able to stop and pause when I need to make notes or do some research if I need more depth and insight from another translation. NB I realise that the MSG is a paraphrase and so I use it with the ESV and Amplified versions of the Bible. I recommend this highly!
"Keeping The Message Alive"
Narrated very well. I had low expectations--but these readings show I had nothing to worry about! I have to say, this narration has become a part of my daily routine now, and it challenges me to think through scripture carefully. The daily readings are not too long and I can let my imagination take me to the feet of Jesus or to Mount Caramel while listening to the words...
"CLASSIC -- One for the Road"
I own The Daily Message on CD and I have been waiting and watching for it to come out on Audible so that I can access it more easily from a remote location when I travel. Peterson is one of my heroes. I read as much of his writing as I can, but audio is my preferred format these days. I agree that the choice of narrator is imperative in this format. Some voices/styles can be so "unreadable", but Ryan is excellent! Actually fun to listen to. Enjoy!
"Making daily Bible reading an attainable goal!"
I have endeavored to read through the entire Bible more times than I care to count; a few times making it as far as Deuteronomy before fizzling out. Breaking the Bible up into digestible chunks with a mixture of old and New Testament and a chapter from Psalms or Proverbs thrown in to keep things fresh is definitely the way to go! This version does that for you! And having it in an audio format makes it easy to stick with.
I have been a fan of The Message Bible since the first time I read the first verse in it. What you do need to be aware of is that this is a paraphrase, not a literal word for word translation. Peterson has taken the entire Bible and translated thought for thought based on his interpretation of the underlying meaning. What this means is that you do need to take it with a grain of salt and be prepared to compare to a literal translation if something doesn't sound right to you. Many traditionalists criticize paraphrasing the Scripture, but do these same traditionalists not do the same thing every time they preach a verse from their literal translation? They read their text, and then proceed to expound upon it and help you know how to interpret it specific to your life. You should take Peterson in that same context. He is expounding upon God's Word and giving you a practical interpretation that you can apply to your life. Is this format infallible? Of course not! But that doesn't mean God is not at work in this. Even the beloved King James Version needs to be viewed in the light of historical context from when it was translated and compared to the original text.
My one complaint is that I wish the individual daily readings were broke out into individual chapters rather than lumping several per chapter. It really makes it hard if you want to review that days' reading again. Finding your place is nearly impossible because when you skip back you won't even know what chapter you're listening to.
Beyond words, fabulous, a stirring, motivating, strong companion. Listened to 1/3 of The Bible in a few days. Thanks!
"The best I've tried!"
I have downloaded many audible Bibles from other places and hated the voice that read them. This is perfect and very easy to listen to. Thank you so much!!!
Excellent narrator, easy to listen to.
I am addicted to audio books and love my Daily Message. The narrator is excellent and the translation is a great way to start my day.
"Listening and reading"
I like that I can listen as I read. But also, can listen and do other things while still being able to "read" through the Bible and get other things done. It's "power" building the my faith and bringing a new perspective and understanding to ancient language.
"Daily devotional, not a Message Version Bible"
I was expecting a Message version of the whole bible, to listen to from Genesis to Revelation. turned out to be a daily devotional bible, skipping from the old testament to the new testament back and forth.. Tried to use it but just not usable for the my purpose. It would be excellent as a daily devotional, just not what I was looking for.
The Message passes as a paraphrase BUT (huge caveat) some of the turns of phrase are incorrect.
I have to say that several representations of Jesus were disturbing or inaccurate. Having said that KR did a respectable job for such a LONG job. Pronunciation of several words also incorrect.
It's ok b/c it forces the reader to stay in the Word. Sometimes a paraphrase is just the ticket.
I like the idea of a daily reading. This was set up very well! The partitioned download also worked well.
