Publisher's Summary

Higher, farther, faster - what every real aviator aspires to. The SR-71 was the epitome of this dream for three decades. The only way to beat the SR-71 was to rocket into space, and every astronaut in the office with me in the 1960s would have loved to have flown the Blackbird. In many ways it placed greater demand on piloting proficiency than any spacecraft. Terry's book answers all those questions you ever had about the wonderful challenge of controlling an airplane, flying at 80,000 feet and more than three times the speed of sound for hours at a time.

"Great in sight on life and times of Blackbird crew"

Great story. Good anecdotes with real depth. A bit repetitive at times, but this is more a function of similar questions being asked and answered. Well worth the time investment esp. Pappas allows the casual observer to step into an active duty squadron, and strap into Habu, for a wild ride into aviation history.

    "More please!!!"

Great book, great highlights. I'd love to hear Terry's whole story. Please write a book that takes us into his life, his experiences, his victories behind the stick.
I suspect there are some amazing stories out there that the sr71 team needs to cough up before we start to lose that amazing time in the usaf history. These guy are the real RIGHT STUFF. I look forward to more... Please. :-)

"Interesting Insight into an Amazing Plane"

This relatively short book offers interesting insight into what it was like to fly the SR-71, a truly amazing plane that has never been duplicated. Terry Pappas flew the SR-71, and, interestingly, moved to it from the B-52. This does not seem at first blush like a natural progression, but it becomes more clear when one learns of the importance of repeated in-air refuelings for the SR-71. Pappas had a great deal of experience with those in the B-52.

Not surprisingly, the selection process was difficult and the training grueling. It also does not sound like it would have been much fun wearing the astronaut-like suit necessary to fly the plane. If you are interested in the subject, the book is well worth reading.

The book is in a question and answer format, which Pappas apparently likes. It is OK, but I would have preferred a narrative format. There is also quite a bit of unnecessary repetition, perhaps due to the thought that some readers would just jump to particular questions without having read what appeared earlier in the book.

The narration is good. Chris Abell sounds just like a fighter jock.

Best aircraft ever built. Will search for more information. A shame the program was decommissioned.

    "Superb"

Loved it. Really opened my eyes on what the SR-71 is like to fly and what it takes to fly one of these aircraft. Can be pretty emotional too. Knowing that this aircraft is now retired. Being an air force pilot has always been my dream. Very helpful for references has well since I am doing a semester's project on that subject. Thanks Mr. Pappas for sharing your wonderful experiences. Your flyby over NASA base was pretty badass too ;) Its on YouTube!

    Any additional comments?

Q&A isn't the way I prefer any of this information, but any information on the Blackbird is jaw-dropping and satisfying. As Q&A goes it's fine but I'd prefer a straight book. That said if you're interested in the Blackbird it won't disappoint you. There is a top-notch book on the X-15 Rocket Plane if you're into related subject matter.
