Nothing makes traditional left and right kiss and make up faster than when they're faced with an articulate libertarian. Avert your eyes from this dangerous extremist, citizen! Government is composed of wise public servants who innocently pursue the common good!
In Real Dissent, Tom Woods demolishes some of the toughest critics of libertarianism in his trademark way. In doing so he strays beyond what he calls the index card of allowable opinion, the narrow range within which the media and political classes permit debate to take place in America.
Should 40% or 35% of our income be taxed? That's the kind of debate the New York Times prefers. Should our income be taxed at all? Now that's out of bounds, citizen!
In foreign policy, Americans are permitted to choose between bombing a despised country or starving its people to death. You favor peace? Why, you must be an "extremist"!
On the Federal Reserve, the debate is over which policy the Fed should pursue. But what if the Fed is itself the problem? No answer, because the question isn't raised.
Real Dissent is organized into ten parts:
The index card of allowable opinion forces Americans into narrow and pointless debates, and closes off discussion of plausible and humane alternatives. For the sake of American liberty, it's time we set that thing on fire.

"Tom has a great voice."
Yes. If you want an alternative to the mainstream Fox, MSNBC, New York Times, CNN status quo, Tom gives an excellent fact filled revisionist approach to current events through a Libertarian eye. I have already reviewed the Kindle version, see: Outstanding Material! Tom is the modern day Murray Rothbard! I will keep this related to audio related details only.
I regularly listen to Tom's podcasts and his voice is excellent. Since he is reading his own material, he has great tone and inflection at the appropriate points. It's easy to listen to this book in audio format.
"Libertarian to the core"
Intelligent. Insightful. Informed. Intriguing. Thought provoking. Tom Woods is definitely a bright and well informed writer with an easy style and information that packs a punch. Highly recommended!
"Must read for anyone right, left, or in between"
I wish Tom Woods was required reading for our schools. I was once an independent, leaning toward the left until the Hope we were all promised from Obama was quickly dashed. After finding Woods, among other libertarians, it is such common sense how the world should work. This is a must read for anyone, right, left or somewhere in between.
Really enjoyed Woods erudition, scope and humor. Highly recommended for the anarcho-curious. Definitely check out his podcast for more!
This book really works well for those were not libertarian and wish to understand the mindset of one. As for those who are libertarians, this book provides one with excellent talking points to easily dismantle any opinion from the left and the neocon influence.
"Tom Woods does it again"
I got audiobooks for this book and it was well worth it.
It reminds me of other historical/philosophical books summarizing problems and positions. It goes into good detail and poses strong arguments which are not easily defeated.
Everything. His writing is good, his reading is good. He is a master of his subject.
As Tom Woods puts it. Destroying the 3 by 5 card of allowable opinion.
Interesting from beginning to end, this book criticizes a number of issues and intelligently enacts a world view which is capable of more.
A must read! One of those books every person interested in liberty will read at some point in their lifetime.
"Loved the book. Full of knowledge and truth"
Outside Pandora's box
I liked this book because it helped me "escape" from this prison planet. None but ourselves can free our minds....well sometimes with the help from others like Tom Woods Jr. Educational...and not in a brainwashed sort of way
So far, from what I can see, Thomas E. Woods Jr. is a real American. By that I mean he is not only a supporter, but also a modern day patriot of individual freedom, justice, liberty and equality. For the future...Tom Woods would be a great president...just never trust the secret service
United States citizens argue over which mafia family they should vote for...and then expect change year after year. It's like those same U.S. citizens still believe in lying to their children year after year about a fat man who breaks into your house at night to pass out presents. Lying to children no matter how "innocent" the lie is...is wrong. That creates a psychological imbalance of distrust and dishonesty, which could end up controlling them for the rest of their lives. Hypocrisy is the new world religion....
"Great book for anyone who wants to defend liberty."
Read by the author like only the author could read it. Recommended for anyone who wants to understand and defend civil and economic freedom, and a non-interventionist foreign policy.
A Must read for any critical thinking American. Thanks for all you do Mr Woods!
