Summary

Jon Ronson is fascinated by madness, extraordinary behaviour and the human mind. He has spent his life investigating crazy events, following fascinating people and unearthing unusual stories. Collected here from various sources (including The Guardian and GQ America) are the best of his adventures. Always intrigued by our ability to believe the unbelievable, Jon meets the man preparing to welcome the aliens to Earth, the woman trying to build a fully conscious robotic replica of the love of her life and the Deal or No Deal contestants with a foolproof system to beat the Banker.

Jon realizes that it's possible for our madness to be a force for good when he meets America's real-life superheroes or a force for evil when he meets the Reverend 'Death' George Exoo, who has dubiously assisted in more than a hundred mercy killings. He goes to a UFO convention in the Nevada desert with Robbie Williams, asks Insane Clown Posse (who are possibly America's nastiest rappers) whether it's true they've actually been evangelical Christians all along and rummages through the extensive archives of Stanley Kubrick. Frequently hilarious, sometimes disturbing, always entertaining, these compelling encounters with people on the edge of madness will have you wondering just what we're capable of.

This is an updated edition with new afterword, written and narrated by Jon Ronson.

A must for Jon Ronson fans!

Easy to dip in and out of it as it’s a series of short stories taken from his newspapers columns over the years! Loved Jon for a while now and this didn’t disappoint even tho the stories take place early 2000’s.

The world is a wacky and wonderful place. Experiencing it through Jon Ronson is the best option. Otherwise you'd probably go mad.

Not Bad

A little strange and thin on the ground but OK as a way to pass the time

Great storytelling and gentle sensitive approach

Jon Ronson has an unmistakable voice and his style is gentle and balanced and uses a wide mix of stories and meetings to stretch your thinking and experience. you never quite know who or what you're going to meet next but it made a great journey companion as a collection of anecdotes.

Standardly amazing Jon Ronson journalism OK

Trigger warning: vivid accounts of child abuse in the chapter about Jonathan King Court case.

lost at sea but certainly not drowning

a 'pale little man' with a powerful turn of phrase - jon ronson's never less than sincere, probing and wittily perceptive journalism ceaslessly enthralls. A great colleciton of articles presented to perfection, his voice in your head reverberates with insightful observation. just brilliant !

Humanity in all its strange colours.

I recently came across Jon Ronson on The Late Late Show on Irish television talking to Ryan Tuberty about relatively ordinary people who had been attacked mercilessly on social media for things they'd said or done and how social media had become a faceless judge, jury and executioner, and I liked him. After listening to Lost at Sea I like him more. All the stories in this collection are about people. There are tales of failed rock stars and real rock superstars with weird obsessions; encounters with unassuming heroes and the terrifying daring-dos of real superheroes; and meetings with the likeably strange and the downright bewildered (and even disturbingly odd). To all the encounters Jon Ronson brings humanity and compassion. It is refreshing and engaging. High recommended.
