Summary

A riveting true story of murder and detection in 15th-century Paris, by one of the most brilliant medievalists of his generation.

On a chilly November night in 1407, Louis of Orleans was murdered by a band of masked men. The crime stunned and paralyzed France since Louis had often ruled in place of his brother King Charles, who had gone mad. As panic seized Paris, an investigation began. In charge was the Provost of Paris, Guillaume de Tignonville, the city's chief law enforcement officer - and one of history's first detectives. As de Tignonville began to investigate, he realized that his hunt for the truth was much more dangerous than he ever could have imagined.

A rich portrait of a distant world, Blood Royal is a gripping story of conspiracy, crime and an increasingly desperate hunt for the truth. And in Guillaume de Tignonville, we have an unforgettable detective for the ages, a classic gumshoe for a cobblestoned era.

fantastic insight into murder in medieval Paris.

Well written as though it was a modern day crime thriller. plus point to hear the voices of medieval people otherwise lost to history. would definitely recommend it.

Royally good!

A riveting gallop through the dark streets of Paris and the dark corridors of power in medieval France. Think Game of Thrones meets Poirot - but by far better.

A cracking true story

Would you consider the audio edition of Blood Royal to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print version.

What did you like best about this story?

Eric Jager brings history to life. He takes these events, the twists and turns, and tells a better story with them than fiction.

What about Rene Auberjonois’s performance did you like?

Excellent audio performance.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was totally immersed by this book and did not want it to finish.

Any additional comments?

I read this book because some years ago I read 'The Last Duel' by Eric Jager, another fantastic book.

Medieval murder with massive repurcussions

This is a vivid story based on meticulous records collated under the provost of Paris, accounts by witnesses of a fateful murder , which ended having a dreadful impact on the wider country. Colourful and atmospheric, but it also vividly evokes the dreadful sufferings at the hands of some of the main players, Dukes of Burgundy, Orleans and Henry 5 of England who between them epitomise almost psychopathic ruthlessness ambition hedonism and greed. So at times and increasingly a grim read as France descends into a state of war torn chaos with as usual the ordinary people paying the highest prices. I've always disliked Henry fifth of England and that's reinforced to greater depths by this book.
A dark tale but highly recommended if you are interested in medieval life and powerplays.

Very Odd

This is a very odd recording - it should have been an interesting story, but for me it wasn't. Due, after several listens because I could not understand why I found such an interesting story to be so boring, to a monotone and pace less reading. By pace less, I mean lacking in variation.
