I read the reviews before I used my credit and was eager to listen and get started learning French. All went well and it's all very well singing along to the words you know already.
When the story introduces new phrases / sentences they are sung like Edith Piaf and I can't understand what they are saying (singing) the whole phrase rolls over into one long sound without breaking it down.
I get the catchy songs to help you to remember but let's learn the words first.
I don't know
Not in the format it is. It needs tweaking and don't rush into singing songs without being able to ensure the listener has got a grip of the words first. Break them down so they can be mixed and matched with other sentences, questions etc. This is the only frustrating part of the book and sometimes I can't even decifer what letter the words begin with.
I'm going to look for another book.
This is the cutest language course I've come across - strangely appealing, as well as perfect walking-the-dog learning. The story line follows an American lad who meets a French girl, goes to work, does his shopping, visits his family and so on. All the while he recieves ghostly advice from his old high school French teacher. The tales ends in a frenzy at the disco. The musical 'moods' of each section really do seem to make it all easier to remember.
"You'll Be Singing French All Day"
This is an incredible way to learn a new language - easy, fun and effective. After listening to this tape on the way to work, you will be singing French phrases in your head all day. The dialogues are basic, but the storyline is clever and the music is surprisingly catchy. Thumbs up!
"Really fun way to learn"
I really have enjoyed this title. I highly recommend this title to anyone who wants to attain some french language skills in an very easy and enjoyable way. The utilization of music and song to teach is a great concept and it works very well. You won't go wrong with this title, I just wish it was longer. Maybe there will be a part two? Lets hope so.
"More Fun than Pimsleur"
"Rush Hour French" is incredibly upbeat and fun. The story line is easy to follow and contains an impression number of useful words and phrases in only 2 CDs. The voices are pleasant and pronunciation is excellent. The French characters sound French and the American character speaks French with an American accent, like you and I do as we learn. Having the repetition occur in the form of song makes this more enjoyable to listen to than the Pimsleur series, although I recommend both. If you buy this, be sure to the download the booklet, too, so you can learn the spelling of the words.
"Not a great value without the printed book"
I agree that this is a good way to learn some basic French in prep. for a brief vacation, but I find it really hard to follow the language via the audio only. I'd give it a higher rating, but as this is my first experience with this language, I find it very hard to figure out the exact words I'm supposed to be parroting back during the lessons. To get the full value from this I suggest you also get the book that would usually accompany this program.
It's very dynamic, fun and easy, because you don't get bored (as in other programs where one repeats tediously). I wish there were sequel for higher levels.
"terrible for beginners"
Rush Hour French might be good as a refresher, but lacks the repetition necessary for a beginner (after multiple listens, I still can't count to ten in French--why is there no jingle for this simple task?). The presentation is entertaining, but at the expense of teaching. Further, the sections within the audible file don't match the chapter breaks, making navigation nearly impossible. Recommended only for worst enemies.
"Not Very Helpful to Me"
I'm not a total beginner, but I thought that the musical format might help more basic words and phrases "stick." It didn't really do that. I thought that although the speakers had pleasant speaking voices, their singing voices were a little scary and the songs were "cheesy." I liked the Earworms programs better.
