Having studied the basics of French several years ago, I decided to revive my interest in the language by listening to French Short Stories for Beginners. Overall, this audiobook has been a very positive experience and has aided me greatly.
The main advantage I have found is that the audiobook keeps you interested. I’m sure there are many people out there like me, who have attempted to learn a language through traditional textbooks and other resources only to become bored, frustrated and lost. As the French language is primarily a hobby for me, I wanted something enjoyable yet worthwhile. I have found that this product has fit this role nicely as the stories are entertaining enough to keep you listening and develop your French skills at the same time. Furthering from this, I believe the role of stories has helped me memorize phrases and vocabulary. I find it easy to forget new words, however, the added context of a specific story has helped me to retain information.
The format of the book is as such. It is split up into various topics such as school, holidays, and hobbies. In each topic, a story segment is read out fully in French – allowing more advanced listeners to translate in their head. The story is then broken down line by line and read out in both French and English. This allows you to listen to small snippets whenever is convenient. In some chapters, I would recommend beginners to adjust the audio to a slower speed so that they can follow along better and attempt to translate some sections in their head before it is read out line by line.
Taken as a whole this audiobook has been a fantastic resource and I encourage both beginners and more advanced speakers to give this book a go as I am sure you will learn something new.
This book is very informative and great for beginners! Also the audio is very clear.
I would most certainly recommend this book to a friend. This book has helped me rediscover my long-lost love of the French Language and Culture as a whole. I bought this book after a recommendation from a friend and I must say that I am supremely happy with it!
One of the hardest things about learning a new language is being able to practice it on a consistent basis, this book tackles that problem head on by providing easy to access short stories which are each fun and engaging. This book comes with audio narration which is very clear and helps an incredible amount with pronunciation. The stories are read at a nice steady pace for a beginner like me. Learn French with Stories will have you talking French in no time at all!
After reading you part of a story, the narrator repeats the sentence slowly, going over each word and phrase. This is incredibly helpful as it reinforces how words and phrases an be strung together to form meaning.
Personally, I have not listened to any other performance by Frederic Bibard and Mariem Nouni. However, the narration in this book is truly amazing and based on this fact I would certainly consider giving their other performances a listen.
If you are interested in learning French, this is the book for you.
Yes. The audio book is indeed a great way of learning the French language especially for someone like me who is just starting learning the language and likewise for someone who is not much of a reader. For me, learning French is quite a challenge because it is different from the way English words are spoken or pronounced; but, this audio book made it easy for me to follow along and practice the proper way of speaking the language. In addition, I can listen to it anywhere and anytime I want.
I think the audio book can function as a stand-alone. However, for someone who is just starting learning the language, I think it is best to combine both the audio and the print version. By listening to the audio and reading the print all at once makes the learning experience more effective.
I like the story content. They are simple yet interesting and relates to real life and everyday situations and thus easy to picture out. It’s as if I am also there as the story is being told. The story in chapter 9 brings back memories of my travel adventures. I also like how the stories are crafted, that as I continue to listen to it, I gradually get familiar with the words and develop an understanding as to the meaning of the words and the way the phrases or sentences are structured.
The first part is about getting acquainted with the language. Here, Mariem read the story by paragraphs and in between the paragraphs, the words or phrases are then broken down for translation. This is where the first phase of learning takes place; that is, to get familiar with the words and how the words are pronounced. Obviously, the audio book provided the pronunciation lesson which the printed version of the book was unable to address.
The second part provides level 2 of the learning process; that is, to practice listening and integrate what was learned from the first part. Here, the short stories are narrated by Frederick in full French, at a slow pace.
The third and last part of the book I think is for someone who is already comfortable with the language. It is similar to level 2 where Frederick narrated the stories in full French but this time at a normal pace.
Therefore; the audio book sets different levels of learning; whereas, the printed version/PDF copy does not. The PDF copy only provided the first part minus the pronunciation guide.
I think so. Since I like the story content because it is very much realistic and relatable, I would want to just continue listening to it until it ends.
I appreciate that the book included a vocabulary recap at the end of each chapter because it allows me to test my learning. I just wished that the audio book also repeated the paragraphs at the end of each set of translations to put newly learnt words or phrases to test and better understand the thought of each paragraph.
Yes, because now I can learn how to properly pronounce the words instead of just reading them. You can easily find out how to words are spelled online, but you can't always find proper pronunciation for these words, which is quite useful in real life
What i liked best was the vocabulary flash cards in midst of the stories which helped me stay on track and not lose attention.
What they brought to the story in my opinion is the sense of understanding how to tell a story as if it's a real story that happened. It's not as apparent as one might think if a book was just read.
Francais pour vous
When I was school, French was my third language.. We didn't focus that much on learning it in school, so by the time I finished, I had the basics covered but not much else. I recently had a trip to France, during which I was even more sure that my French was disastrous. This is why I took a decision to improve my French, I started off by Googling for resources and translating as I went but it didn't take me far. However, this audible book was a saviour! The amount of stories included was more than enough and the idea of the "flash cards" in the story helped me keep track of my vocabulary and following through the story as it's being told. I believe this resource is great for people like me with previous basic knowledge in French. It can also be quite useful for people who are still learning at the beginning but are eager to pursue their goal in learning French. C'est une langue tres magnifique!
I liked the fact that the narrators speak slowly and sometimes repeat the words/phrases so you can fully understand them. I also liked that they use a simple but really commonly used vocabulary, having the proper French accent.
Now I feel more confident in my abilities to speak French, a language I always wanted to learn. I am currently a bit closer to my dream of going to France and only talk in French.
The stories are interesting because they are contemporary and the narrators talk about very common topics, which is a very good way to learn the most used words.
Overall, it’s a very efficient and easy way to start learning French. I can listen to it whenever I want: while cooking, driving, before going to bed, etc. It’s a game changer!
"Very Helpful Book"
French: Short Stories for Beginners + Audio is an amazing book. I took French throughout high school but did not continue to practice after graduation. This was a wonderful refresher. I was not sure how easily I would be able to follow the stories after years without practice, but the style of this book was very easy to follow.
The book is separated into chapters that are anywhere from ten to twenty minutes long. This gives ample time to fit a chapter into anyone’s busy schedule. There are also various speeds that the book can be listened to. It can go as slow as 0.75x or as fast as 3x. This allows more advanced listeners to go through the chapters faster. It even offers a sleep timer to get some practice in before bed!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has taken French or who wants to learn French. It is very easy to follow and can fit into anyone’s daily schedule. It has definitely helped me sharpen up my French speaking skills.
"Great audiobook to start your french learning"
A very friendly material that helps to improve your vocabulary and the first listening steps
Fred because is very gentle and demonstrate good values
I had been enrolled for french classes for a month. It was great but at the same time tiring because the school is quite far from my home. However, due to the importance a give to the french language for business and arts ( in this 21st Century you should handle at least 3 languages to be competitive) I decided to take some practice form other sources. (Additionally, I have my daughter enrolled in an international school where french is the main language. )
I was willing to practice some words and frases with my princess but is difficult to find something good online. I decided to do a search here in Amazon to see what can help me and I found this wonderful audiobook. Not only I practiced my french but I help my daughter with a wider vocabulary since I played the audio while we are at home.
The speakers are very good, the voices are clear and the stories are nice and very interesting. After every new word there is a translation to english so you can know what they are talking about. I would recommend this material to anyone who is willing to perfect the listening and also the speaking( you could repeat after the narrative ). Once you complete this book you start to improve your french language skill considerable. I have listened this book many times and the words and phrases are very solid in my mind.
"Great Stories That Teach Conversational French"
I don't think I would have such an easy time absorbing the authentic French pronunciation if it weren't for this book being an audio book.
This is perfect for someone who, like me, has dabbled with French in the past, but doesn't have time to sit down with a book to study. The stories are enjoyable, and it made for a perfect light listening while going for a jog or walk. The stories themselves are particularly helpful in regards to conversational language - it helped me nail down a load of key phrases that I would commonly use in everyday speech. Plus, the tales help with the ability to recall certain words/phrase - I can easily remember which narrative a word/phrase came from, and that helps a ton. I wish I'd had this book of stories when I was first learning French: I feel like I would've retained more of it. Grab this for yourself if you're just starting out on the road to learning French, or if you've learned some French but need a refresher. This is a great tool, and a great set of stories. Highly recommended.
"Closest Thing to Complete Immersion"
I have been trying to become fluent in French for years. I studied it all throughout high school and two semesters in college, but I still have never felt like I 'got' it. This audiobook was perfect for me. I walk for about half an hour to work, so this is perfect to listen to during my commute. I bet it would be great in a car too. Even just playing it in the background while I do other things makes me feel like I'm getting used to the French language being spoken around me. It's a super long book, so if you keep it playing, it's not like it's going to end abruptly.
The book begins with short stories told in half French, half English. I have always wanted something like this because it doesn't really feel like a lesson. It feels like you're really just listening to a Franglais story. The reader will stop and repeat phrases, translating them. Much later on in the book, the reader stops translating everything. But by that time, you're sort of ready to just listen to some French. The stories aren't super complicated, so any basic knowledge of vocabulary will carry you through. The readers (there is a man and woman) don't speak too quickly either, so it's definitely made to teach French in an effective way. I think I really was learning new words right away and realizing I understood what I was hearing. It's fun to repeat what you hear out loud, too. Très bien!
"An interesting way for learning!"
As a person who is trying to learn french (self-teaching), I found the short story approach very interesting, since it allowed me to get a context for the new words, and the vocabulary recap was really hepful. I also enjoyed listening to both female and male voices as well.
"Excellent way to learn French"
I'm very pleased to find this version to learn French at home. This audiobook is an excelent version for self learners like me that need to practice listening and speaking French at the convenience of their home. I personally like to study at home because my schedule don't allow me to attend to classes . I also like the fact that I can donwload it on my smartphone and practice anywhere. Repetion for me is the key for memorizing any language and this course allows you to repeat as much as needed.
The story overall is very interesting.
Yes very well done.
A Frenh Story
Being a Filipino who's willing to learn different languages like French, this book really help me a lot. Aside from having an affordable price, it lessens the hassle most especially for those people who are having a hectic schedule. Through this, I can learn French all by myself. I will know the correct pronunciations of the words just by hearing it. And what amaze me most is that it has a PDF copy. While listening to it, I can understand the French words spoken, clearly and accurately. I can follow it words by words. I can learn French, anytime and anywhere. I can play it for a multiple times. No need to attend such classes and pay high amount. This book is really recommendable. Thumbs up and Five stars for this.
"This book is awesome"
I love this book every single minute that I've read it. Although I am not an expert speaking french I have some knowledge about this language but my vocabulary is not the best . And the last aspect was not a obstacle when I was listening the book. The histories are funny and interesting also the people of the book speak clearly and SHORT. It means that is not a tedious book. Defintely I will recomend this book for the people that is not and expert speaking french and want to improve their listening skills .
"Practical easy and succint"
This book is similar to the Routledge language series of language books i.e. introduction to vocab then functional use of vocab, which i've used before for learning Chinese, but this book provides a larger spread of vocabulary which i prefer over the Routledge series. The reader's reading is music to the ears making the listening experience enjoyable and informative.
"Super Helpful to those with some French knowledge"
I am very new to the french language and culture and I really enjoyed these short stories. They really helped me to expand my vocabulary and overall sentence structure. I also liked that the narrator, before the audio began, mentioned that there was a pdf included with the audiobook; because I was able to look at the words as they were being spoken and get a more complete idea of how to say the words. And because I am such a beginner it made it easier for me to follow the stories.
Another part that was really helpful was that after a small section of each story, the narrator went through some of the more advanced phrases and words and told me the english meanings. This helped me to get the meaning and the pronunciation of these words and phrases because they were repeated multiple times.
There is also a vocabulary recap after each story is completed. Which kept the new vocabulary in my head so I wasn't as overwhelmed with trying to remember from the first story to the last story. And at the end of the audiobook it is all placed in a nice reference guide.
I recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their french vocabulary and pronunciation, especially if you have some experience with the language; but as someone, like me, with very, very basic understanding you might have some difficulty at first, but this definitely helped my vocabulary and understanding grow.
